Is adding warm water and good or a bad thing?
I havent dont to be on the safe side.

It's not too much of a problem (dechlorinated of course!) The only thing is, if it comes from an emersion tank it can contain some nasties. (not sure what). I'm guessing that you are concerned about temperature drop when doing water changes? As a water change usually involves replacing only 25-30% of you tank water then it isn't much of a problem. Hint: in winter I draw 25lts of water in a plastic carbouy, dechlorinate and leave it against a radiator or put it in the airing cupboard for a couple of days to take the chill off :good:

lol thanks dorsey!!
You were right about the water change but the is the big one after the cycle. I didnt want to add warm water but the temp is at about 15°c which is think isnt good for the fish.

Can anyone confirm that last bit please?

Just do like doresy suggests; draw the water a day ahead and let it set at room temperature. The temperature drop won't be that significant. I'd rather do that than draw water from a water heater tank. Just how much water were you planing to replace? How did you cycle? With fish?

EDIT: I see now you used fishless cycling. Why didn't you change the water before buying the fish?

Alternatively, you can just put water straight from the cold tap in like most people with large tanks do. The temp drop will be nothing to upset fish or bacteria and I have never seen a temp drop of more than 2 degrees when changing 40% on my largest tank.

I put the kettle on (filling with cold tap water) then put almost as much water as I need in my tub (I use an insulated plastic thing that people put picnics in) then I pour the boiled water in: that way, the water is a similar temperature to the temp in my tank (give or take) and the warm tap wasn't used at all. Still, Always Dechlorinate!

Hi guys thanks for the replies. The temp is slowly creeping back up. I guess i just need to be patient again.
TerraDreamer i haven't actually added any fish yet that's the reason i asked, i didn't want to add the fish in water to cold for them and i didn't want to add warm water if it was going to cause problems.

Again thanks. your help is most appreciated!!

Personally, I just add some boiled water to the bucket of cold tap water to take off the chill and a good water conditioner and add the whole lot to the tank.

If you have now completed fishless cycling, then your water change must be a big one. However s you have no fish in there yet, it doesn't matter too much whether it is warm or cold.

However if you are adding very cold water and you then have to wait more than 12hrs for it to warm up before you can add fish, then there is a chance that your bacteria will start to die off unless you add a bit of ammonia. If you do this, obviously you need to wait for all the ammonia and nitrites to be clear before you add fish.

Personally I never add water taken from the hot water storage (immersion heater as some call it) tank.

Irf.

i leave cold water to warm up in airing cupboard

never use hot/warm water from fawcet as it can contain large amount of Cu and Pb (houses built b4 1970 may have led pipes)

Im glad i asked now!! otherwise i could have had some serious problems!!
Thanks all.
