Hi all,

i have just brought a 3ft fish tank and i love Betta's its just it seems they arent very good tank mates. I have my heart set on buying a male betta as i have not yet purchased any fish as i am cycling it. as the tank is big i am wanting to know what would be some safe options for tank mates. i want some nice coloured fish to make my tank nice and bright. any ideas?

Many thanks,

alannah

Well 3ft could be split into three with tank dividers giving you room for 3 bettas? how about that would you like to have 3 ? if not read the FAQ section on what tank mates with betta or something to that effect. Its a much debated question "can bettas have tank mates" and will set off a waterfall of different opinions on here!!!! if you like bettas I say get out those dividers and pick 3 beauty's!
Or if you dont want to divide it you could buy 5 - 6 female bettas of different colours and they would live happily together
(after a pecking order has been formed!)

Hope this helps :good:

If you want both a betta and something else but without any possible aggro from the betta, you could simply divide off a 5 gallon section at one end of the tank for the betta, and have the remaining 25 gallons as a peaceful community tank with small colourful fish such as male endlers livebearers, Galaxy Rasboros, cories, Khulie loaches...( not all at once of course ).

Hi,
You have quite afew options!

I have sucessfully kept a betta in a community with other community fish (platys, cories, khulis etc) however theres alot of conflicting advice from people about whether it should/can be done. Bettas are quite territorial and may attack anything that resembles a betta, so basically anything colourful or with long fins, on the other hand you could get a totally peaceful betta that is fine however it could also be nipped by your other fish which is quite common.

You could try it but have a small tank running to remove the betta if things should go wrong or like Honeythorn said you could divide off a small section of your tank for the betta alone, and have the rest for your other fish.
You could also create a female betta tank and have 5 or so females living together.
Or you could set up your new tank without a betta and get yourself another small (5gallon) tank to keep your betta in

Let us know how you get on

I have had a 5 gal tank for about 3-4 months now and it consists of 1 Betta, 3 Glo Zebras and 2 Neons. There doesn't seem to be any problems. Even if the Betta thinks about it the Glo fish Zebras and Neons are just too quick for him.

He likes to spend his day going down to the bottom, swim through and around the rock, brush his beautiful tail against the plants and really doesn't pay attention to his tank mates.

mmm thanks to everyone for replying means a lot i am still unsure about what i am going to do. i think i may divide some of the tank just so he dont get hurt. everyone still add your advice, its much appricated :)
