i have heard they need a filter and also heard need no filter. Heater, no heater. I have a 3 gallon tank. Do I need an air pump filter and heater. I know how to feed them and water changes.

filter is optional.

With the filter, there is less water changing, but most bettas dont like the water flow, they perfer still water.

Air pump helps cycle the water to keeep things moving, again, optional. Most bettas dont like any form of waterflow.

Heater for a 3 gal is needed, they like higher temp, 75-80*'s. since they are tropical fish

In a 3 gallon I would say no filter, Bettas like slow moving water, a heater would be welcomed, you don't need one, but if you keep their water warm and stable they will like it a lot more :)

That and you don't really need to cycle as you should be doing weekly water changes.

No airpump is needed, they breath fresh air from the top, so makes sure there's some kind of a hole on top to let fresh air in, they breath like you and me :)

A heater really depends, depends on your room temp for one, and depends on your fish, my fish do fine without one, but i have a couple heaters, and when I put it in, and their water stays stable, they thrive, they really swim around so much more and build bigger nests, that's just an observation I made :)

and on the florida thing-- I would guess no  get a therm. and see what your water temp is :)

Thank you for the replies :p . My son had a betta but it died within a month, i didn't know enough about needing a heater and there was too much water disturbance from the air and filter. We are going to go buy one in a couple of hours and a heater for the tank. I think this one will live a long and happy life. I hate having an empty tank sitting on my kitchen counter.

I don't have heaters either. I just make sure the room all my bettas are in stays warm enough for them. The temp doesn't drop below 70 at night, and reaches temps of about 78 during the day right now. I think they like the temp to fluctuate, in the wild there is no way the temp stays a steady temp all day long. Cooler temps mean it is time to sleep IMO. I also don't use filters on any of my tanks, I do however do 100% water changes at least once a week. I have a 10G, 5G, 2.25G, and 4 1G that have to be changed 100%. It is worth it to see them bubblenesting everyday.

I dont think you need an heater. I live in Minnesota, and I have never needed one. And btw, bettas are coldwater, arent they? I've heard the live and thrive in coldwater ponds, correctZ?

the temp stays at around 73-75F without a heater, would that be ok. My goldfish tank is about that temp and the tank will be in the same room.

From my limited experience, Bettas are alot more active when they have warmer water. Without a heater, they just lay there, sleeping on the bottom or one of their plants. However, my house tends to be kept fairly cold, where I have found my room a frigid 58 degrees in the mornings at times

I went and bought a betta yesterday, he is beautiful. I did not buy a heater. This morning I checked the temp of the water and it is at 79F which is excellent :D . I think the light helps on his tank to keep water warmer. His name is rainbow. And sorry can't get pictures, need a digital and a scanner to post them. Hope to get that soon.
