Want To Breed My Sword Tales

Hey everyone! New to the forum and breeding but not new to fish keeping. I was just wondering if anyone knows where I can get detailed information on how to breed swordies from start to fry. Any of your own tips and experiences are more then welcome and appreciated. A couple of my questions which probably have obvious answers are how to tell when the female is preggo and should i put them in a seperate tank from the community? Thanks a ton for any responses i get.

shouldnt be long before you have an army of swords! id say a ratio of 3 femails to 1 male is good.

try to get fish that arent brother and sister as the spawn will be better. fry will come every 4-6 weeks.

the femails are preggers probably all the time-as they can store sperm, you can tell when they are close to giving birth when they are very fat, there is also a thing called a gravid? spot. the area towards the back of the belly goes sort of black- which is the fry inside.

if you want to keep the fry then a separate tank is a good idea- move the pregnant femails there when they look ready- then remove after birthing as they will eat the young. you will be lucky if any fry servive in a community setup, mine never do.

my swordtails have always given birth at night and dont seem to be happy when i turn on the light and there trying to give birth-so i turn the light off if this happens.

Thanks so so much, I noticed a black spot right behind the white part inside the belly of the fish and thought maybe she was pregnant so now I am REALLY excited. Do you know about how long the fry stays inside before she gives birth? Thanks a bunch.

You probably still have several weeks of wait, so don't get too excited yet.

You will need to provide bushy plants or such for the babies to hide in. Almost any fish, including the parents, will predate on the babies.

Its actually kind of funny because when I typed that I couldnt decide if it was tales or tails since its a word I dont spell often. It was about an hour after I posted I was driving down the road and said to myself, "damn, its not tale its tail". Its a true story, not a fairytail. Haha, just kidding I know its fairytale.

Don't worry about your swordtails cause I've had mine for two weeks and when i brought the female home from the pet store she was pregnant and she is pregnant wrie now. You will have lots of babies cause they have between 5 and 70 babies soon your not going to want to have then all. If you get to many you can always try to sell them to your local petstore when they come of age.

Yea, my girlfriends uncle owns a pet shop so when they are of age I will more then likely sell most of them to him or maybe trade for some supplies. Thanks alot for all the help. Anyone have any pics of their own swordie fry?

Ya when i finally noticed that my female swordtail had her babies i only saved one he is about 4 days old write now and i hope i save a few more when she has her babies in like 3 weeks. I dont want them all to die again. I have been trying to get pictures of the fry but my digital camera isnt working write now ill keep trying.
