I have just upgraded to an aquastart 320 (i know its not the Harrods of fish tanks LOL) but I love it the lighting makes my Sunset platys, neons and flame gourami look fantastic, like they are in HD. now I would like to add something else to compliment them.

What are your thoughts and ideas?
Thanks

i would up the numbers you have. i would get more neon tetra's as they need alot more of there own kind. you should also get some more platys. you could perhaps get some different colour ones i think would look nice. you could also think about getting something to occupy different parts of the tank ie some corie cats for the bottom or some halfbeaks for the surface. i dont no how big your tank is though

im sure if you upped your numbers first you would see a big difference in your fish and appreciate them more

Definatley up your current stock:

6-7x Neon Tetras
3x Sunset Platies
1x Dwarf Gourami

Not much you could add, tank is only 28litres. If you wanted, you could add some shrimp? Cherry Shrimp or Amano Shrimp would look nice, and there is no limit to how many. :good:

An upgrade to a 28l? ... I don't think I want to know what you had those eight fish in before!

Seriously, those fish need an upgrade to something like a 90l tank (to which you can then add ~4 more Neon Tetras) , or you rehome everything bar the Dwarf Gouami.

I never said how many of each I had. My water and tank Is in pristine condition, I perform weekly W/C as well as regular API water testing so in my opinion they live like royalty. I have 3 platys, 5 neons and a gourami. I know everyone sticks to the pretence if 1 inch per 1 gallon but I know my fish are well and happy. Thanks for your comments and tha last thing I want to do is put my fish at risk.

Your signature states "4 X NEONS, 3 X SUNSET PLATIES AND A FLAME DWARF GOURAMI", hence I said eight fish.

How much water are you changing a week? Is this 28l the thickest jungle of fast growing plants the world has ever seen, getting daily fertiliser and a carbon source? If you are feeding these fish enough food to reach their full potential adult sizes, I cannot believe for one second that you are not going to kill them through lethal nitrate levels (typically 300mg/l) eventually or stress induced illnesses, even if they are getting the equivalent of more than 100% water changes every week without fail.

Definitely the winner of the most overstocked tank posted in the past week by a country mile.

Cant disagree with the above. Needed saying.

I would upgrade again, and then again, and then increase the stock list to suitable number per species.

THEN, they will live like royalty.

I know everyone sticks to the pretence if 1 itch per 1 gallon but I know my fish are well and happy. Thanks for your comments and tha last thing I want to do is put my fish at risk.

No one sticks to that rule, it is complete crap.
But you are putting your fish at risk.

I am planning on having
12 neons
8 Pygmy cories
6 kuhli loaches
In my 16 gallon tank, that is not 16 inches of fish, it's all due to the biolad, how active the fish is, territorial, size, schooling, and whether or not they are bottom dwellers, mid or top :good:

Tis true, its a guideline, if that, and its so vague.

Take for example a fully grown tetra, and a similar length small (juvenile) 1.5" gourami. The gourami is a deep bodied fish, more waste.

Based on the above, the inch per gallon rule is tosh. Dont use it.

When I look at my tank I find it hard to see that my fish are at risk. I totally understand as the fish get bigger, there maybe an issue but do neons, and platys really grow massive to cause concern. It's not like its a prison cell with 50 blokes in. You must be able to use your judgement when looking at your tank when thinking its overstocked. There seems to be plenty of water to swim around in, hiding places etc. I must be being nieve, I'll take on board what has been said and won't add anymore and just enjoy what I have. Thanks again

Just because it doesnt look overstocked doesn't mean it isn't. First of all neons are too active for a 28 liter tank IMO, And a 28 liter cannot support a full group of neons dwarf gouramis, require a 10 gallon minimum because of territorial issues, platies are not the best choices for a small tank, because of there activity, and bioload :good: Honestly the only fish suitible for subs a small tank are bettas, and small micro fish

The issue is not so much to do with the size of the tank and water column, but the number per species.

In the wild, Tetra live in groups of 1000's, so having so few can stress them literally, to death. It makes them constantly fear predation. Tetra should be in groups of 8-12+ really, and you cant stock those numbers in the current tank you have because of space constraints.

If you ever get to geting a bigger tank and up the number, you'll likely see a marked difference in behavior.
