Walmart

ive actually had good luck with fish from walmart, i bought a synodontis cat and a pleco there over a year ago, the pleco finally died a few months ago and the syno is doing fine
also i got a killifish there thats been in one of my tanks for a few moths and is doing great.
once i bought an austrailian rainbow from there, the person who bagged it marked it as a goldfish and i got it for 13 cents! too bad it didnt last that long

HAHAHAHAHA! I think its funny that you said that you have had good experience with fish from WalMart and half the fish you mentioned buying from there are now dead! Living a few months does not mean that the fish was doing well. Only a few species of fish that are found in pet stores only live a few years. Most fish live at least 3 to 5 if not a lot longer. Plecos can live more than ten years. I wouldn't say that all WalMart's are bad but most of the ones I have seen have been terrible. Its not just WalMart though, unless a store has dedicated fish keepers working there they usually have terrible conditions for their fish.

oh yea, petsmart is the place for common fish... I find that the best place for fish that run on the rare side is petco if you have one by you.
Yes, I swear by petco.
I try and buy fish from them as often as I can.
Fantastic Warrenties.
Fantastic Employees.
Fantastic Fish.
I've not had one fish from petco die, except when I've killed it myself by mistake :X

Wow I totally jinxed myself. Lately Petsmart has been selling sick fish... 3 fish i bought all died from sickness...hahaha way to go, Sarah.

wow thats a shame, I have had a few fish from petsmart that have quickly ended up sick but thats over a loooong period of time!

The Walmarts around here take very bad care of their fish, in every tank there was at least 1 dead fish and almost all of them were sick.

The Petco here usually takes good care of all their fish but the goldfish. I dont think I have ever been there when they weren't being treated for something and not for sale.

I like Petsmart the best, very rarely have I seen a fish sick and I dont think I have ever seen one dead. Of coarse that could just mean they are very prompt at taking the dead and sick fish out and moving them somewhere else though. This is the only chain store I have bought fish from and I have only lost 2 fish and I had them for over six months. They were guppies BTW and were fully grown when I bought them

Yeah I know, you would think they would just stop selling them. I mean how much money do they actually make when half their stock dies before they can even sell them?

Like most pet stores I assume that they make most of their pet money from equipment. Think about it, a tank plus the stand, filter, gravel and decorations costs a lot more than the cost of a few guppies. And with equipment you don't have to worry about people coming back complaining that it died and that they want a brand new one for free.

The best fish usually come from the smaller Mom and Pop type speciallty fish stores. I do not have any of the big chain-stores around here and even the small chain stores here are mostly fish related. You can not sell dogs and cats in a pet store in Sweden so the cat and dog stuff is just food, toys and accessories.

I was told last night that the reason some peoples fish die after they buy them from wal-mart is that they pass through the security booth and they get magnitized.

I can barely contain my laughter, but iv heard much worse from walmart employees. the reason the fish die is because they are not cared for properly at walmart, and they are treated as a product rather than an animal. its very sad that walmart cant even put in people who know what they are talking about. i think the worst thing iv heard from an employee is "fish dont breath oxygen" after i asked why the betta cups were stacked on top of each other (preventing air fomr getting in) :/

Yes I know that, thats why I dont get why they sell the fish. They aren't making good money off them seeing as many of them die before they even get sold. They should just stop killing helpless animals and sell the equipment. If anything they will make more money by not having to buy fish just to kill them, they dont need to take up space with the tanks that are holding the dead fish so they can use that space to put product that will actually sell and maybe they will get more people to buy from them. Im sure their are people that wont give money to a place like that when they mistreat animals. They are already having other problems that I wont go into, with people not wanting to shop there, you would think they would want to do somethings to attract more costumers especially when this would be so easy to do.

i still have my fish that i bought at walmart that are from months ago. anyways... what i find nice about buying fish at walmart is that they give 90 day guarantee.

I just don't buy from chain-stores, I would rather support locally-owned businesses.

the reason the fish die is because they are not cared for properly at walmart

I heard a figure that said, 20 out of 100 fish will survive the trip (shipping), less than 10 will survive longer than 4 days at walmart.
thats kinda sad.... I wonder how walmart makes any money off it?
