Right now I have just a 10 gal tank and everything is going fine. I would like to buy a bigger tank now. My question is the walmart 55gal tank any good? Would i need to get any different parts or filter system for it?

Is it a kit? If so, please give more details as to what comes with the tank...ie.type of filter, cover, light hood, etc.

If it's just the tank, compare the price with prices online or at a lfs. You can then buy the other necessary equipment either online or whereever you can find the best prices.

My mom has the wally world tank and it works fine. The only draw backs: light is not strong enough if you want live plants; filter is just your run of the mill filter; heater is ok, but not that good. If you are willing to live with the equipment for a little while, it is a good tank.

I agree with freshwatergal.

Chances are, you'll want to replace the filter at some point. And the lights, too, if you have live plants.

I have the 29 gallon wal-mart kit and it's awsome! The filter works really really well. All of my filters are Regent and I'm happy with them. The heater keeps the temp stable and I've had the tank for about 8 months and I still have the same light! It lasts forever. I will try to post pics of the tank if you want so you can see the equipment it comes with.

I too have heard good things about wally world tanks and there prices are reasonable. Just for the love of god don't stock it with their fish.

I got my 29 Gallon aquarium as a gift about 5 years ago. It is one of the wal-mart kits and it is still working great today. So I would say they are pretty decent kits. Only thing I have had to replace was the heater. The filter that comes with the 55 is decent. It is the same one that is on my 29. It is a Aqua Tech (Regent) 30-60. If you ever need parts pretty much anything off a Penguin 330 will fit it.

I priced the 55, but ended up getting mine from a LFS. It was a little cheaper then the wal-mart setup and has better componets to go with it.

We bought a 55-gallon kit and stand from Walmart about 6 weeks ago. The tank came with the light hood, filter and heater. We haven't had any problems with it and everything is still working good.

my cousin bought that tank. In walmart and it broke in 4 days when he put the water in the tank. Next day it was leaking like hell i suggest you dont risk it. Ive got mine at petsmart with a kit with a filter heater and vaccum syphon for 155.99 with a tank of TopFin best tank mark.

Okay, 8 years ago I bought the 55 gallon tank at Wal-Mart and it is still up and going today. I am VERY pleased. However, it wasn't the kit. I got a HOT filter and better equip.....and all of that is still going too. Lights that came with were great although I upgraded the bulbs.......................it should be fine.........keep your reciept though and you can take it back if it leaks..........

Am I too late to put in my 2 cents?

1) I assume that you are getting a tank for Fish only. Not salt, not plants.

2) I assume that you will be using this for 10+ years?
.................

Get a tank hood stand combo. Do not get the stuff inside.
Spend a bit more so you don't have to spend more latter.

Make sure the tank is AllGlass (is that right the name?)

Why get 55 when 75 takes almost the same footprint lenthwise, much more usable shape AKA surface area and aquascaping width. And the hight is same.. (high tanks suck :)

Get a can filter and make sure the prefilter (the tube coming in) is being filered well. Alternatively get the largest penguin filters that you can HOB.

Get a Tintanium heater (so much nicer not having to wory about glass (god I have been shocked many times and burnt the carpet doh with glass ones)). Get a 300W or even better 2 150w.

Substrate optional.. suggest not getting too deap, 1/2" - 2" is plenty IMO

75g Tank hood stand 300
good can 110-200 (fluval 404/Eheim 2026 w media
heater 25-40 (300w /2 150)

of course:
thermometer
test kit
food
love
WEEKS LATER
fish :)

If she does do plants latter the light needs to be upgraded no matter which method you go :)
Have fun
