Platys (Xiphophorous sp.) are large carniverous marine fish. They grow to about 2 feet long and need a special tank at least 6 feet deep to simulate the pressure of their natural environment.

They mainly snack on lionfish and other common marine fish such as cories. They will eat vegetation, but due to their high metabolism only whole vegetables should be placed in the tank. They especially appreciate a whole cabbage.

When breeding, the male will stand vertically in the water and wave his tail around to the beat of "Stayin Alive" by the Beegees. The female will watch this display from a short distance away, then run off to the toilets with her other female friends and laugh at the displaying male.

Platys are livebearers, this means the mother is still alive when she gives birth. Compare this to the more common deadbearers, where the parent often dies a week or 2 before spawning.

Baby platys (fry) are only 1mm long when born, but rapidly grow to 2mm within 6 months. At month 7 they have a small growth spurt and reach their adult size of 2 feet.

Platys have been noted to attack manta rays and tiger sharks in the wild.

These are specialist fish and not for the hobbyist.
