Hi all,

So after a lot of thinking, starting a marine tank in my new flat just won't be feasible. But I will be keeping my Vision 260 so will be looking to set it up with some New Worlds - that way I will have both new and old world cichlids in my living room!! The tank is a Juwel Vision 260. I'm going to keep hold of one of my EX1200's for filtration and might get a small power head just to make sure there are no deadspots etc.

As for stocking, I'm a bit out of touch with New World cichlid compatibility, so excuse any slip ups, but I would like:

Red Spotted Severum
Angelfish
Pictus catfish

I thought a large group of angels would work well (the tank has good height to it), and then the sev as a centrepiece (I've read that they are compatible, but please let me know if not!). Finally a group of pictus on the bottom? Or are they too aggro for angelfish? What kind of numbers would work? Would the lone Sev be ok as Seriously Fish said they can get aggressive when kept alone...

Lots of questions sorry!

Nick

Can't say for sure about pictus, bit iv kept severum and angel fish before for years and they were absolutely fine together. A lone sev would be fine, I bought 3, years ago, 2 of which paired up, and then tormented the other 1 to death..... literally! But I have a friend who keeps them, and he has a good number of them together with no major hassles.

Ok thanks - and do you think 260 is big enough for a sev?
My other thought was a species tank for the angels...but really unsure as to what numbers would work.

Not sure of the dimensions of the tank, but if you say that the depth is fine for Angels, then it should be fine for a Severum. If your wanting a group of Angels though, I would be careful that they do not pair up though as they may bully the Severum. Maybe a singleton from each species might work?

I also keep my male Severum with four Pictus (amongst other fish) and they get on fine. They have not bothered with each other in the past 11 months that I have had the Severum. Pictus need at least a four footer, but I imagine yours must be that.

I'd maybe look at a Rotkeil Severum instead, Red spots can ultimately get 12" in size and can be quite bulky fish, I'd personally say 300l would be the minimum tank size for them and with delicate species like angels there is always the small risk of them being injured by a much stockier, bigger fish

This.

Sevs are mahoosive fish, angels are much more dainty.

I have a breeding pair of adult sevs with a pair of angels in a 75g, deffo overstocked by internet standards but water stats and aggression are perfect.

Fair play, thats good but its not always going to be like that for every tank. So while its worth considering how your tank is in this case you also need to realise that if you were to put odds against this situation I would guess its 60/40 with the 60 being its not going to work...

Just something to think about.

For the OP, with the above taken into consideration

I agree with the other posts a Rotkiel would work much better :)

Thanks all for the input so far - been a long day at work so nice to come back and think fish!

Fishprotector, the tank is 4ft, so think Pictus would fit ok.
Davo, appreciate your input, and nice to see someone from Shropshire on here! I moved down here from Shrewsbury myself.
Minnnt / SeverumGS - appreciate your comments.
Wills - I don't like those odds!

So if I go for a Sev, go for a Rotkeil. That's fine by me - and would you say just one?
Then what size group of angels? I remember a while back PFK had a pic of an angel fish Rio 240 and that had a group of maybe 8-10 in. Ideally (and don't know if this would be possible) I would like to use them almost like shoaling fish - so a good sized group.
And then Pictus for the bottom..?

Or is this all a bit ambitious?

Cheers guys.

Nick

Hi Nick, imo the Sev would be out of place with a group of Angels. The tank needs to be about them rather than a Sev.

The George Farmer tank you're refering to is this one

That's the one!! Thanks for the link. Angels only it is...the Sev was only an after thought anyway...

So maybe I need to think more traditional community and get a nice colourful, shoaling tetra in there.

Well the Rummies would work (or the false ones) obviously, but Cardinals are the other usual occupants. I have Rosy Tetra's in with some of mine and Lemon Tetra's in with my other Angels. A nice trio of a dwarf cichlid such as Nannacara/Laetacara or Apistogramma would go well. Or, for something a little different, maybe have a look for the Checkerboard Cichlid.

Thanks Minnnt - was trying to find a pic of your set up too as remember you got angels fairly recently.
The other thing I thinking about is possibly resurrecting this idea for the bottom of the tank...but might be getting a bit crowded with a big group of angels, tetra, and then these too.
