I brought some yesterday and they say-

Dilute in 50ml of tank water, let stand for 5 hours and add to tank. They are supposed to use up the Nitrates and Phosphates that the Algae uses to grow. I just wondered if any one has used them and if they are safe to use with my fish. (second 50g fish list in sig.)

Thanks

i thought u had a planted tank if so buying something to use up the nitrates and phosphates will surely have an effect on the plant growth ?

To reduce phosphate levels,(which the algae like) feed less (if possible) and increase water changes. Test the tap water as well to see if that isn't the source of phosphate.

what are your nitrate and phosphate readings? because ideally nitrates @ 5-10 ppm phosphates @ 0.5-1.0 ppm

also check this http://www.plantedtank.net/forum/index.php goto the algae section there is some real good info

I do not currently have a test kit. :/ So I can't tell you the readings. As for my local Phosphate-that is not the problem I have tested it before, and none of my other tanks have ever had this problem. I know the capsules may harm the plants but I can't see another option. :/ It all started when I added CO2 and reflectors, should I take them out?

What kind of algae do you have Ryan?

I had a Green Water case and I solved it buy just reducing the light period to 8 hours. I did not do any water changes. you can try that and see if it helps

without a test kit there is no way that u can even begin to tell what the problem is

ahahah u added co2 and reflectors which will stimulate plant growth, making them use up the nutrients in the water faster , it sounds to me as if they have consumed all the main nutrients in the water, nitrate , magnesium etc , now the plants have nothing much to use , they r no longer outcompeting the algae for the nutrients left , due to slower growth once they have used all the nitrates etc , like oazanki said reduce light time may help a bit , it did in my case as well :))

Thanks guys,

I am going to take the reflector of next week when the CO2 injector runs out, and we will see what happens.
