Hi guys

I have had 4 amano shrimps for the last 18 months.

Nothing new added to the tank, stats bob on.

Today I noticed are carrying eggs - great !

TOnight, I am pointing out said mothers to my dad when all 4 go crazy, zoom around the tank then drop dead ..... or so I thought. They lie at the bottom making the odd twitch which we thought might be the flow of the water just moving their legs. Then my fish who normally dont go anywhere near the shrimps move in for a tasty meal - as they start to have a nibble the shrinp gets up and swims off, only to be seen upside down in a plant / on the sand afterwards.

Each time they look dead, but then as soon as a fish has a go, they move!!

One still has her eggs the others have now gone.

Has anyone any idea what the heck is going on????

NO chance of contaminates in the tank either.

Cheers

Jo

You haven't added any new live plants by an chance?

Lying sideways on the bottom is never a good sign :( And dropping the eggs could be an indication of some kind of shock.

i found one sort of plant food killed a lot of my shrimp (50% water changes every day for 5 days saved some of them)
have you fed the plants or as isnail said added new ones ?
If i was you i would do 50% water change right away and again tomorrow
and see how they go
you might be able to save them though i'm not sure

good luck

Sarah xx

Thanks for your replies.

One plant was added last weekend - but is the same as another established plant I have in the tank.

I did a water change today as I do every week on a Thursday so nothing new for them there and I added JBL plant fertiliser, again something that has been used since I got the shrimps.

Im stumped, one is now completely dead and the other three I have put in a breed net to stop them being picked at. They mooch about then drop to the side.

I'm wary of doing another water change today in case I upset the fish

the plant could have been treated in copper to kill any snails before you got it
this in turn would kill your shrimps
doing another water change will not damage the fish at all

Remove the plant and do a 50% water change when the plant is removed
then soak the plant for a week (cant remember what you use to remove any copper)
