As you know, I've been struggling with my sick gouramie for 2 weeks now. Today he is REALLY suffering  (None of my meds helped!)....It breakes my heart to see him like this, his got a big ulcer with stuff coming out and he is a bit bloated. He is definitely dieng. I don't know if I can let him suffer mutch longer, but don't know what will be the less traumatic way for him and me to let him die? Sorry to ask this, but I know we all feel the same way about living things, What way can I end his life?

I tried but can't, need to register again? In the meen time, I really need help....

i am really really sorry. i would net him out and throw him really hard at an outside concrete floor. it doesn't sound nice, but it IS over very quick

I've read a few things on this and understand the reason why people are against putting a fish into cold icy water but seriously, throw it against a floor?!? You have to think about actually physically doing that to a living animal, I really can't believe that can be done. I appreciate it will be over quickly but I wouldn't fancy being thrown in front of a bus by my dad to end my misery!?!?

most people suggest clove oil, frozen water or straight off with its head, either by cutting it off or crushing it  i myself have never done any of these so don't know how to advice you on how to do it

Your gourami IS going to die, either by your hand or a continued slow death. (I had the same condition with my male) Catch him in a small net, roll it over to make him still then a hard flick to the head, then a couple more just to make sure. Over in a split second and nobody would have the right to hold it against you.

Clove oil is the only way to put a fish to sleep. You can buy it in a product called Koi Calm. I really don't understand why people don't have a bottle like me. It lasts decades and literally just sends them to sleep. If your cat was ill you wouldn't just freeze it or slam it against the ground would you? You would take it too the vet to have it put to sleep. Well, what is different about fish? Everyone says how much they love them etc. and you spend loads on looking after them while their alive, so why not fork out £7.49 (Maidenhead Aquatics price) for a bottle of Koi Calm which will last ages?

P.S. If anyone does struggle to find some (which I know can be difficult) PM me and I can get you a bottle.

to my mind the most humane way to put an animal down is the quickest way, if death is instantaneous then they won't feel much pain. so prepare yourself fully before, net him from the tank straight onto a teatowel laid on a chopping board then with one swift hard descisive movement chop his head off. gory and not pleasant to do but death is instant therefore suffering is least, IMO anyway

Explain how that is better for both parties than dropping 10 drops of clove oil in a bag and waiting 5 minutes for him to peacefully go to sleep?

i never claimed it's better for both parties, if you have to do this then your priority should be the fish not you, as I said I know it's gory and it's not nice to have to do.

the level of suffering in that 5 minutes dying in clove oil is much disputed, and I personally am not convinced that it is a peaceful end.

it's all just my opinion anyway, no trying to state hard and fast facts, to my mind whichever method gets them dead and out of pain the quickest is the most humane, and that is the quickest way I know to kill a fish, so by my logic most humane.

if you want to use or recommend clove oil i respect that, just putting my point of view out there so people faced with this dilemma can make up they're own mind.

believe me i fully sympathise, we may be faced with this decision in a few weeks ourselves, oscars poorly and not responding well to treatment. How the bloody hell we would put down a fat 10" fish I do not know. Emotional subject for me at the moment anyway so I'll shut up.

Hope your oscar gets better soon wiggle.

Have you tried using clove oil before? It's peaceful and I stuggle to see why someone would think it's not?
I've tried both methods.. chopping off the head and using clove oil. When I did have to chop of the head of a neon tetra I had I was so upset and traumatised for weeks I even got to the point of listing all my tanks on eBay. I didn't want to have anything to do with fish for a little while after that.

.........dude...hospital tank...and keep trying to treat him....i dont think any of these death methods are acceptable...suppose you find a cure...after you cut his head off or "put him to sleep" then youll be angry and upset with yourself for taking a innocent fish's life...yes he's prolly suffering..yes hes in pain but he and you will appreciate the fact that you atleast kept trying till the end....never give up...

thanks, no i've never euthanaised a fish, if we have to with oscar that'll be the first time (some induction to it isn't it!?) w were debating possible methods etc last night.

thankfully Ian bless him who has a stronger stomach and less of an emotional attachment to oscar than me offered that I could leave the house for the day and come home to him gone so if we do have to I'll leave it to him to choose the method. if he's the one who'se actually got to do it that's only fair i think.
