I have a spotty plec in with my Guppies. plec never manages to get the sinking food that the LFS gave me as the guppies eat it all - they play with it for hour till it's all gone. So can i just feed plec vegetables alone or does he need wafer or pellets as well? He has bogwood and is not at all shy - he is out around the tank all day. If so what vegetables are ok and how should i prepare them? Thanks.

i use algae pellets :) seem to work for me only had my common plec for 2 days now but i am also interested in feeding mine veg i been looking at cucumber :) a few websites say spoon the seeds out and tie it to a rock or something :)

Mine love courgette and cucumber. Apparently courgette is more nutritious though. I just put it in a cup of boiling water for a few mins and then stick a spoon in it to weigh it down and in it goes. They also love peas and carrots.

sorry to hijack post but how old is your pleco and how much of the cucumber/courgette do you use?

hi there I feed ours cucumber, I cut a bit off about a cm wide, I just rinse it and use a seaweed clip to put it in the tank, the problem I have is the snails and other fish get to it first so I usually put a new bit in every day. But our plecs do feed on it late at night :good:

Try Romain Lettuce(the other types are no good for them). My pleco goes nuts over it and the guppies think it is a new plant and try to sleep under it

I am unsure how old they are but my rusty is around 6 inches and my gold nugget around 3. I cut the courgette or cucumber in half length ways to expose lots of the good stuff then chop a piece around 4 inces long. I put it straight onto the substrate and they just sit on it munching. I normally get 4 servings out of a courgette. They also like cockles and muscles when my cichlids have them.

Thanks everyone - so can i just feed plec vegetables or do i need to supplement with an algae wafer?

The more varied food the better.

nice thank you all as well :D i have just bought a cucumber :) lets see how they like this hahaha

Sorry to resuscitate this post but I had the same question (I have bristlenoses and they love peas, courgette & cucumber). Someone said carrots too and roman lettuce. Anyone had success with other veggies or fruit? Is it safe to experiment, or are there some veg/fruit that could be harmful to the fish or pollute the water?
By the way, do you guys leave the veggies in all night? I've been dropping them in for an hour or two only, then removing them for fear of overfeeding or polluting the water. Is this necessary?

Thanks a lot!

My Oto's ( not a plec I know) love broccoli stalk & green beans.
I leave it overnight for them

no problem and thank you for your posts :) i also leave mine over night i started with cucumber and I am going to try courgette :) i leave mine in over night it hardly touched tbh i might try reducing the size but i have seen my plec suck on it
