Vegetables And Fish!?!?!

Anyone tried sweet potato?  Just wondered as I have some spare.

- oops I see Fluttermoth already metionned it!  Should have read more carefully!

Funny, my platies won't touch blanched courgette.  They like it quite well cooked.  Is there a problem if the veggies are cooked until they're quite soft?

No, it's not a problem, apart from the fact it breaks up faster and can make a bit of a mess!

Here is the only issue with it really soft:  you can't leave it in the tank  long, as it starts to float off and mess up the water parameters, and clog your filter.  I can leave mine in overnight, I steam it about 3 minutes, then dunk in ice cold water, then in the tank.  If you are cooking it longer, time it so you know how long each time; then you will learn just how long you can leave it in before it really starts to mess things.

Hi guys
now I've given mine petit pois without skins which they love and I soaked for a couple of hours in some of their tank water but was wondering about the lettuce do I put whole leaf in or just pieces ?and do I soak it first as well its little gem lettuce :)
I have a rabbit snail (captain nemo) so think he would enjoy it too and my 2 amano shrimps as well as 3 golden barbs 3 danios and 5 neon tetras .
Please feel free to advise if any of these aren't supposed to have the lettuce or anything else I have mentioned.
Thanks
Angie

Lettuce needs 'blanching', that is having boiling water poured over it and left to stand for a couple of minutes (because land plants have more cellulose than aquatic plants, which needs breaking down so your fish/snails can eat it).

I'd start off with half a leaf and see how you get on. If it's left in the tank for too long, it will fall apart and make a bit of a mess, but you do need to leave it in for a couple of hours, at least. You will need to weight it down; I stick a teaspoon through the stalk.

Thanks very much I will get onto it right now :) if only our diets were so easy to sort out :)

melon rinds (only the rind, with a tiny amount of flesh left; i give my fish them after my kids have finished with them!).

What's the reason for not giving melon flesh?  I have some honeydew melon left over but I can't imagine the fish eating the rind.

When I say 'rind', I mean the bit you have left when you (or your kids :p) have finished with it. So, the rind with that little rim of flesh. Too much melon flesh can adversely affect your water quality, as it breaks down so rapidly.

Ok thanks!  The melon I have is a bit hard, only the very top part was really edible for us.  I'll give it a go tomorrow.

I tried the sweet potato 3 days back.  He hee it was  HUGE HIT!  The mystery snails LOVED it, the cory cats were on it, there was barely a free section.

The boiled skinned peas are especially good as Betta's, for example, only have digestive enzymes which break down protein so the pea has almost no nutritional value to them so it passed straight through which kinds of flushes their system out, its a great cure for swim bladder disease as well.

I give my goodeids cucumber with the skin on they just eat the centre out leaving the skin . I stick it to the glass using a suction pad off a heater .

I bought a thing called a screwcumber, all you do is prepare the cucumber or zucchini/courgette as usual, then you literally screw the screwcumber into the desired food, pop it in your tank and it weighs down. Doesn't move an inch, it might roll over but that's fine..
