Vampire Tetras

thanks but do u know what kind of water fresh or salt i might of missed it and how long till it would grow to big for a 3 1/5 meter tank approx 550g's

They are freshwater fish which are found in larger rivers of the Amazon basin. A single one could stay in a 550 for life but no one has ever managed to grow one past 12" in captivity yet as they all die for unknown reasons once they are between 6 and 12 inches.

I really wouldnt recomend this fish for aquariums, it is one species that is definately better off left in the wild.

There are many species that have rather specialised requirements. The causes of their untimely deaths is unknown, but that is because the species are not widely studied, as they rarely have any commercial value. Many common tropicals were impossible to keep a century ago because few field trips had really studied the environment. Once the importance of simple things like stable temperature, pH etc., were discovered, many previously difficult fish became easy.

With these particular horrors, I suspect there is something missing from their captive diet that is essential for their well being.

I agree totally, though what the missing part could be i dont know since their wild diet consists of fish and nothing else. I actually managed to get my pair to take a mixed diet of frozen foods (mussels, cockles, whitebait and prawns (shrimp)) and yet they still fell to the famous payara death syndrome, both fish just gave up eating and waited to die :-(

hey do paranas have mroe nutrients then regular fish like the fish u feed them cause i read they dopen their months swin into a schoal of parana and eat them.

In the wild payara eat any fish that is unfortunate enough to swim above it, pirahna, peacock bass and large catfish are no exception to these immencely powerful large predators that can grow to over 30 inches in length.

but i want a fish that can eat right though small children piranas just nibble at them till they are dead

The question has to be asked - Why would you want to keep one of those fish, they look horribile

I think the same thing about bettas and mollies, its a matter of taste really, some people just want to keep fish that are a little more unusual rather than the commonly seen every day community fish.
