The Vampire Tang is one of the fairly large tangs on the market and are normally bought on special request. The vampire tang is fantasticly patterned consisting of shades of blues and black colours on a beige background. Tangs are very popular due to their unique and unusual body shape. This tang comes from the Indian Ocean and south of Indonesia. It requires lots of space for swimming and high water movement (like most tangs). The Vampire Tang is one of very few tangs that goes though a colour change from juv to adult and therefore makes it a popular choice. It is one of the smaller tangs in its genus.
Common names are Doubleband Surgeonfish, Spinecircle Surgeonfish
Minimium tank size is 180 Gallon
Temperament is semi-aggressive as the Tang is very terroritorial. It likes to be the top dog in an aquarium and will likely fight in order to establish it's place. It is especially aggressive towards other tangs, especially those in it's genus. You should, if your planning on adding tangs together in one tank, add them at the same time, or the smallest first. Normally once territory has been established, the tang is calmer.
Eats algae and meaty foods, this tang eats algae in the wild. It's diet should be comprised of algae based foods such as nori seaweed or marine flakes. The tang will also take meaty foods and should be offered them on a regular basis. This Tang feeds in mainly on algae based foods.
Temperature should be keep within normal range of about 73-80 degrees.
Reef Safe? Yes completely
Size for a fully grown Vampire Tang will reach 10 inches but has been known to grown to larger especially in the wild. Males will normally grow bigger than the females.
Hardiness? Hardy provided this fish is given adequate space for swimming and fed as mentioned above. The Tang is very prone to marine ich, especially so if stressed, which is why it should be provided with ideal conditions.
Type of species is Tang.
Breeding is unlikely in a marine aquarium.
