Can you trim and propagate vallisneria Gigantea and Spiralis and nana?

I'm new and learning about plants

No, you do not trim Vallis species unless they are too long for the tank. Then
you can cut them but the cuttings won't grow and the plant won't grow new leaves where it's been cut. So don't cut them any shorter than the top of the tank.

Vallis usually spread by runners and you simply leave the plants to grow. When the new plants are about 12 inches tall, you can cut the runners, wait a few weeks and then replant the new plant.

Vallis can produce flowers and they sometimes get pollinated if the plants are outside, but it doesn't normally occur in aquariums.

Do not get giant or Jungle Vallis because it doesn't do well in aquariums. Use narrow or twisted Vallis for aquariums.

Thank you. I cut the brown tips off the plants when i put them in (on advise form the shop) so those plants now will not grow?


I should just wait until they get to the surface and them trim to that level and they will not get taller?

The trimmed Vals will grow, but the cut off pieces won't. Vals spread from the roots and new plants can pop up via runners under the sand/gravel. If they are happy, they grow steadily. I have Vallisneria americana that started as 6-7 pieces, and now number in the hundreds. They become tall in tall tanks and I trim them once every couole of months (I like them lying on the surface as they grow). In shallower tanks they don't grow as well,
