I use one, but not really to control algae, as that has never been something I have had problems with. I use it to minimise bad bacteria that may harm my fish. That said it will stop some algae, but not all. If you are talking about algae on your glass, then no, if you are talking about suspended algae then yes.
Ensure you buy a big enough unit and that the water flow through the unit is correct. Also it must go on the outlet side of your filter or you will risk killing the bacteria in your filter.
I have one. It didn't bother my brown algae (when I had some) at all. I have it to kill the bad bacteria in the water as DevotedToDiscus said. You may want to cut down on the amount of hours your main tank lights are on.
