Using my telescope

Last night I took out my telescope. It was unbelievable. I saw Jupiter and it’s four largest moons. I also saw Saturn, ( not it’s rings ) it took my breath away. I also looked at a few other stats. Wow just wow. Having a chance to look at the planets is something I think everyone should have.

Is this amazement of yours owing to less light pollution re lockdown, then?

What are the specs of your telescope I have one but I don't think it's as good as your considering what you are revealing.

Oh on another note I read an interesting article recently expressing dismay over how the sky will be forever changing as the likes of Elon Musk will be launching thousands of satellites into the low orbit area so people will forever see these moving stars rather than the sky that has been shared for thousands of years..

Must admit am tempted to get a telescope soon as you mentioned that the winter is coming and with that comes the cold and that makes for crystal clear skies......

Long ago my father-in-law bought my kids a telescope, it was a basic refractor scope. It was fun to look at the moon with more details but stars/planets were still just tiny dots in the sky. Kids were completely bored.

I would suggest an app enabled scope ie: look at the image on your phone. If you could get a system where the scope identifies coordinates then downloads a high res image to display, that would be alot of fun. Find Jupiter then download a Hubble image of Jupiter, wow Dad!

Callum, my lad, has a Amazon Kids Fire tablet and honestly I can very easily throw this darned thing away due to the fact he is glued to that thing sometimes.

It is difficult to compete with video games. I bought my kids a slot car set long ago but it was very lame compared to Need for Speed, Porsche Unleashed video game with force feedback steering wheel.

As another poster suggested, set up the timer feature to limit their time found on many video products.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a half decent telescope that’s not too expensive?
Say between £50-£100 maybe, might go a little more if it’s worth it. Or is that too cheap and not worth it?

Now you can see how much I know about telescopes

Just realised I’ve sort of hijacked @TheTenthDoctor ‘s thread!

Sorry! :flowers:
Your good! @Ch4rlie. we all hijack sometimes.

I never actually quarentiened. I went out more than I'd ever gone out. Mostly because everyone quit their job so I took all their hours and began working like a fiend. So I don't get lockdown jokes or anything like that. I just continued my normal life without any incident, biking walking, school work.
The telescope is a large reflecting telescope. It was a gift from my entire family a few years back, I'd always wanted a telescope and so they pooled their money and gave me it.

Musk claims they are addressing this issue by making the satellites non-reflective. Personally I think the world would be a better place by running fiber optics trunk lines everywhere with 5G towers connected to them instead of a satellite system.

I would imagine that would be too expensive, but a good idea.
