I just acquired 4 tanks this past weekend a 20 gal., a 10 gal, and two 2.5 hex's.; as well as all the equipment that goes with them for free. All the tanks hold water with no leaks but each needs a good cleaning due to mineral deposits. the two hex's are acrylic. What would be the best way to clean these 4 tanks ? I cannot use bleach as it causes my skin to actually peel off if any gets on me so I stay away from it totally. Also how necessary is the plastic top trim on the tank as the trim on the 10 gal has broken and is coming off. Would it be okay to remove it and how would I go about doing so?

hi there madmom. i would say just use hot water and some gloves or even bleach (works better) and some gloves to solve ur problem. as far as teh plastic piece are you refering to teh plastic that sits on top that the light sits on? if so depending on what fish you are going to be adding i suggest you replace it to prevent any deaths due to jumping. better safe than sorry.

Correct me if I'm wrong as I'm a newb here but isn't vinegar supposed to be good on that?

Yes vinegar can be just as good. Try that first if you have an allergic response. Also CLR, a products name which stands for calcium lime remover is a possibility as well. I have used it on all my tanks and not had problems. I am assured it is simply an acid and not detergent so it isn't extremely toxic to fish.
