Used Fluval

Hey guys,

So I am purchasing a used tank and with it is coming a fluval 305. I have no experience with canister filters as I've always been accustomed to HOB's.
Do I need to buy all new filter media to be safe/ is this an option?

Or does anyone have a proven safe way to make sure this filter is clean and ready for use in a new tank with no problems?

I have always just used the old media unless it is visibly damaged. All i do is give it a really good wash in hot water.
