whats the difference between uk & us gallons??? is there one?? excuse my ignorance but ive spent a large part of my life in australia where you dont use gallons at all ( oz uses litres)
we have a 12X18X48 inch tank & would like to know what is it in uk & us gallons.( esp for calculating medication doses as both countries products are sold here in the uk)

US gallons are smaller than UK gallons by about 20% (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) Here's a link with conversion tables that gives you volume in both uk and us gallons. Hope it helps conversion tables

thanks g
we've been living under the illusion that our tank is 33 gal (what sort of gal i have no idea) for some reason. still my other half was never any good at maths & neither am i. :D
yipee our tank just got bigger!!
ps: great conversion/calculator for tanks!!!

If its any use, US gallons are almost exactly 4 litres. UK gallons are exactly 8 pints, which is a little more than 4 litres so it's much harder to convert litres to UK (imperial) gallons.

us gal = 3,785412 liters
uk gal = 4,546092 liters

Just divide liter by uk gal:

200 (liters) / 4,546092 = 44 (uk gal)

However, both measuring units are odd

Well nearly everyone is almost right. I've lived both sides of the Atlantic here are the REAL numbers!!

1 US Gall = 0.8 Imperial Gall - EXACTLY (The pint is only 16 oz instead of 20oz so a pint of beer seems small in the US!!)

1 US Gall = 3.8Litres (near enough)
1 Imperial Gall = 4.5 Litres (near enough)

As an aside. This gives many Europeans the idea that US cars are Gas Guzzlers that deliver lousy mileage. In many cases (SUV's, trucks etc) this is near the truth but for a saloon car the US cars seem to deliver less mileage. But it is because their gallon is smaller!!

graemesmith, isn't usa going to turn to metric system? Or did I just read/hear wrong? Hmm... Or was it uk?

I hope not.

I've heard my mom say when she was a kid that the US talked about going metric. I don't think it will ever happen here.

But isn't it awful to study science (like chemistry, physics), because everything is given by using metric system, in SI-system.?

It isn't given in metrics in the US tho. At least not the schoolbooks and other books I've read.

If I was to study it like you did it would bother me and I'd learn it but to be honest I never see the metric system except for here at this forum and sometimes for fish. I can count on one hand the number of times I would have needed to know it that I can remember.

I like being different than the rest of the World. Makes me feel unique.
