That fish in the pic on the link I would say was not 100 pure, I have never in all my years seen one with a body shape the same as a citrinellus or Vieja............

also with these you cant tell by just looking at them, both females and males can look the same, the only sure-fire way of sexing them is by "VENTING" them.

If you wanted to vent this Cichlid you need to see of the vent is bogger than the anus, if bigger female, smaller male.

the vent pic you posted is not enough to make a 100% answer but I an more for male.

this is my old Jags vent from the side, he was more that 100% male .lol...

thanks for the reply bolty, im really confused with this fish cause id love to breed it.
that picture made me think hybrid. the thing is on Cichlid-forum somebody said the female has the black coninuing into her fins whereas the male dosnt, this is the only real cosmetic difference, and mine has what is left of its fins with black in.
will you tell me effectively how to vent this fish so i can identify it ?
or must i try to catch it and take a picture? i dont want to risk it jumping out of the net and damaging itself. its a very powerful fish

have you looked on the net?
web sites will explain it better than I can

but the best way is

males vent same size or smaller than anus
females vent would be big enough to see
its bigger than her anus

some sites

thats very helpful but i cant find its anus HAHA. its not dark coloured or anything it dosnt show up. its almost impsosible to see under the fish as soon as i come anywhere near its got its gills all flared bright red identical to a firemouth, and trying to bite me through the glass

Hey u defitly got a male they feircly guard thier territory and female will only brighten thier colors during or when then r displaying mating behavoir to the male and female swim freely unlike the males always guarding one spot but buitiful male displayed mine dont get that color full but still u should be able to order a female at a privat owned petstore k
