Hi there. i am babysitting my Dads 2 fish tanks. His smaller Juwel tank has got quite warm. The thermometer says 30c, pushing 32?? Is this because the room temp is quite hot due to the heatwave? The room does get sun all day long. The heater seems a basic 50w Juwel one with no thermostat, well i cant see an idicator anywhere. The dial on top doesn't have any markings so i dont know which way is up or down?? The fish are just hanging around at the bottom of the tank. There is movemnt in the tank from the filter. Any ideas?

Unplug the heater for a bit. The heatwave is over, so should return to normal. Don't forget to plug it back in though!

i am not actually staying with the fish. I pop in once a day to feed them etc

Take some bottles of water and trow them int he freezer. Then put them in the fish tank ( leave the lid on the bottle). It will lowewr the temp.

i would maybe just add some colder tap water to the tanks. maybe remove some of the warmer water, to lower the temp down to 26 degrees or so.

:)

Which way do i turn the dial on the heater to lower it? i presume anti-clockwise?

I would probably leave the heater, you're more likely to screw it up by messing with it. The tank isn't hot because of the heater, it's hot because of the room (I'm guessing, unless the heater is broken) so if you leave the heater as is then adding cooler water should be all you need to do to cool it down.

Yeah, leave the heater, if it is working right, it's not going to be on when the temp is over what it is set at.

If the water is still rising you have a few options.

assuming you do not have air conditioning.

1. Turn off all not needed equipment ... mainly lights. and close curtains
2. If the fish aren't jumpers (check first) leave the lid option (as I say check first)
3. If the water the next day is still not dropping if you can get air blowing across the surface of the water.
4. change the water in 2 degree increments. i.e. change the water with a 2 degree increment then wait 6 hours and do it again until desirable.

If it gets more extreme let us know.
