Hello i have just registered to discuss this matter.

I have had an Elite 50L for quite some time now, it has worked fine and have house 3 female Guppies, 1 male, 5 neon Tetras, A clown loach, and a small BGK (Black ghost Knife).
Just Today, i have realise their is nothing coming out of my filter, i checked it out, and it has been found out it might have limescale, can you get rid of this SAFELY? And if it isnt limescale, is an Elite Stingray Filter known to break down? I have installed an airstone for safety until i fix the problem!

Thanks- Mikey

EDIT: If a picture is needed, i will happily post some

Howdie Mike, welcome to the forum and I hope you have not joined us to have your one question answered.... Visit us every day & get lots more friends and experience.... clever ppl on this forum.

I, personally am not a big fan of the stingray filters and like you, I've been let down before.... Good choice to get the airstone in whilst you're looking at the problem.

If you do springclean the filter for better performance, I'd suggest you skip your next 2 water changes until the filter kicks in properly... Obviously, if it does not work... I hope your aeration is quite strong and also do not do an untimely water change until your replacement filter (preferably not a Stingray) kicks in.

Thanks for Replying Ludwig, thanks for the welcome!

Do you reccomend any specific type of filter to get? Or any other Airpump, i have an elite 80, but the airstone really isnt Areating much, i think thats caused by the certain air pump.

You can open your stingray filter up quite easily to investigate, assuming you have the filter turned off!

Start by removing the front cover by opening it as if you were changing the media and remove the motor/impeller by squeezing the two plastic clips and pushing the motor from behind it will slide out very easily.

On the bottom the impeller is easily viewable (white usually) and there is a small oval shaped cover you can easily remove that usually without much effort. Remove that and remove the impeller. Check the impeller does not have any debris stuck around it preventing it from spinning. To remove the top part of the motor you need to squeeze the two pins on side and after wrestling a bit the top part will "Slide" off.

Once you have it completely apart following those steps your best bet is to wash it under some running water. Remember you're only washing the motor not the filter media so there really should be no worry! Make sure you clear any gunk out that may be trapping the impeller from spinning properly ensure when you place it back it in can freely rotate (the magnet part now the plastic tip, the plastic blade/tip will only spin 180 degrees/ish) Place the bottom cover back on and blast some water down through the top outlet, clean the directional nozzle at the top under the tap water also. Then place it all back together reversing the steps above.

You can then test this in a bowl of water, get a big bowl fill it up with water ensuring your filter is all in one piece put it into the bowl of water plug it in. Turn it on, you will probably find it jets out quite powerfully. If this does not work your filter may well and truly be broken :(

If this works replace it back into the filter and ensure it is seated properly, place the filter back into the tank, the trick with the stingray is to submerge it and then rotate it whilst underwater to allow all the air bubbles to escape, turn the filter upside down in the water so the "Tail" part of the filter is pointing vertically you should of removed all the bubbles by now. Place the filter back onto where it was and turn it on.

If this all of a sudden stops working, I would give your 2 filter sponges a quick squeeze in some tank water. (Take a bowl of water out of your tank, put your filter sponges in them and give it 2/3 quick sharp squeezes you may find a lot of plant debris/poop is released place it back into the filter and try again. If for some reason again this does not work even though your filter works in the bowl... then... I'm lost!

EDIT

On all occasions that I have tried to use my Stingray filter it has failed miserably. First attempt the filter wouldn't seal properly and all the water was bypassing the sponges and the impeller gunked up pretty fast. Second attempt same again but it had sucked in so much sand tht the filter was non functional. Third attempt the filter finally closed properly and sealed! Unfortunately the directional nozzle was stuck and tore through my plants and my Amazon swords were somewhat damaged! I wrestled hard to fix it but the lid and seal issue is a big one, it seems to open ever so slight that you can even feel the water being sucked in through it!

On my girlfriends 60Litre tank we used a Fluval U2 filter instead, although you may get away with using a Fluval U1. I am probably going to purchase myself a Fluval U1 for my 40L tank to replace the Stingray. Although the Stingray is apparently more efficient at processing poop. Though the price tells me otherwise.

Wow!!... Thanks Joshua.... (for that practical and relevant reply) I rest my case Mike... ar'nt our members "SIMPLY THE BEST"

I thank you warmely for this set of instructions, i will perform all steps above on my filter now, i will report back with any news.

I have had probably every problem you could get with this filter haha. It's sooo annoying, if you're on a budget you can get it working although if you can afford it you're best of getting a better filter.

The main "problem" I think people have with this filter is the clicking noise it makes, all it is, is trapped air bubbles in the impeller you just need to turn it upside down when its under water to release them.

Would always recommend to upgrade to a better filter if someone can afford to.

The prepeller is EXTREMELY hard to remove, how should i remove it?

It is a magnet after all, If you've got big fingers you'll probably have one hell of a time trying to remove it.

You can use a pair of tweezers to remove it or you can use a blunt knife and "pry" it gently out. I'm glad you got the bottom case off, I had sand stuck in it and it took me a pair of pliers to remove it!

I'll try a pair of tweezers

I'm going out for a Thai buffet in a minute so I hope it goes well for you! Welcome to the forum as well! Hope you managed to get the impeller out, if its stuck quite bad then it could really indicate a big build up of something. If there is plant/poop debris there it usually suggests the filter casing (Grey door thing) isn't closing properly.

Like Ludwig said, its a great idea to keep that air stone going for surface agitation in the mean time.

Though the stingray is actually quite powerful I do question its filtration abilities however.

Good luck! :good:

Edit:

As you suggested earlier if there is another filter for recommendation. I would recommend the Fluval U2, It is a big height wise though width its not. Its shaped like a cuboid. Great filtration and if you're using it in a 50/60 litre tank it will allow for a slightly heavier stocking list. The filtration arrangement is much more effective as the only way in is through the first stage sponge pad and the Poly/Carbon pad then finally through the Ceramics for some heavy Biological cleaning!

The Imperller or whatever is the yellow/white thing at the bottom correct?

The imepeller looks like this http://i16.ebayimg.com/03/i/001/20/1e/1dbe_35.JPG, Mine however is white so I imagine there is a various amount of colours depending on what version it is.

Have you definitely removed the bottom casing on the actual motor? As if you don't remove that you can't remove the impeller.

Just wanted to say thanks to Joshua as I had not cleaned the impeller and didn't realize you could or should take that apart. Afetr 5 mins from reading this thread my filter is back up and running at full power.

Thanks :)
