To get my tank ready for being planted I need to upgrade some things right? I'm not gonna be putting in a special substrate. Just gonna have fertilizers and probably a CO2 system from a LFS or maybe a DIY one.

I really only have to get the lights but then I'll have to get ferts and such.

The lights, there are three options I'm looking at, all of which will have to be ordered online.

The first two are from Dr's. Foster and Smith's website

All-Glass Triple Tube Fluorescent Strip Lights If you click there it will show you what all is included, I think I can use that with my original hood, but I could be wrong. It's the second cheapest of the three.

Coralife Aqualight Single Compact Fluorescent Strip Lights
It comes with 2 21" 65 watt lights. Which would make it around 2.4 WPG. Even though it is the most expensive out of the three I like them because they look modern. But the only downside is that I would have to buy a glass top to the tank, which isn't a problem it's only around 12 dollars on that same site.

Triple Tube Fluorescent Light Strips The cheapest of the three, I still might have to go get another hood but I'm not sure. I'm really leaning towards the second one. I know what I'd have to get so that will probably be the one.

Coralife® Aqualight™ Digital Power Center™ I just need this for my lights to have a timer so I won't have to worry about turning them on and off when I go back to school.

Hagen Plant Grow Natural System with CO2 Just to have a sturdy base for my CO2, then after I use what they give me up, I can just use baking soda and yeast and it would pay for itself in a about a year.

And is where you guys come in, let me know what else I need, what kind of ferts I need since I'm not going to be replacing my substrate. And if you could offer me a little extra help tell me what these plants I have in my tank are called.

Here they are they are in the foreground. Thanks a ton.

The Coralife luminaire will look good, but 2.4WPG gives you a fair bit of light over 54USG(?), especially with DIY CO2. Do you know if each light is individually switchable? That way you could run 1.2WPG for 3 hours, 2.4WPG for 3 hours, 1.2WPG for 3 hours, or something along those lines.

I`m not sure why you will need a glass top for your tank with the luminaire. It will probably just get covered in condensation and disperse a lot of light. The luminaire itself comes with an acrylic cover.

As for fertilisers, the cheapest method in the US is to buy dry ferts from Greg Watson, as far as I know.

The foreground plants look like Lilaeopsis sp, but I wouldn`t quote me on that one. Are the others plastic? If you are upgrading your lighting and fertiliser regime, then I am assuming you are going for a far larger plant mass than you currently have, because you will certainly need it.

I hope they do. Maybe they come with two electrical cords one for each light? But I think the lights are arranged in a straight line not parallel to each other. What should I do then?

I see what you mean. I should have noticed they are PC T5s arranged end to end rather than side by side. You could always hunt around for linear lamps.

I agree with George, it looks like stuff I used to get years ago from my LFS, it certainly wasn't aquatic and was sold as something like 'wheat grass' or 'wheat plant' I think?
