Hi everyone. First off, I bought three glo-fish not too long ago but one is different compared to any I've ever seen. She is much larger than the other two and has long "flowy" fins. I've combed the internet looking for pictures of any glo-fish with similiar characteristics and couldn't find a thing. I took a picture of her but the quality isn't that great. So tell me guys, is my fish a freak of nature or am I incredibly under-educated about fish? haha

There is a pink glofish in the background to compare the size.

Secondly, my friend picked out a dalmatian molly for my tank yesterday and it appears pregnant. I don't think she is close to dropping but I'm not sure how far along she is. I put her in the breeding net just to take a picture of her. She wouldn't stay still otherwise. Am I completely wrong in my assumption that she is expecting?

She doesn't look as big in the picture but she is nice and round

Thanks!

She looks normal to me, the glo-fish that is. They are just mutated zebra danios and zebra danios can have rather flowy fins =)

Not sure about the molly, I'm not livebearer specialist.

Ok thanks Assaye! I saw a post of the stages of molly pregnancy in pictures so I think got that question answered. :)

They're genetically modified. A mutation is normally an error in replicated DNA which causes an unwanted characteristic.

If you could get a close up of the molly I could give you an answer, mollies tend to be quite stocky so it is hard to tell.

The glofish is weird for a glofish but there are definitely zebra danios that have fins like that so it seems within their genetic capabilities.

I thought it was kinda weird too. Maybe I lucked out and got a unique one. Thanks for the comments guys!

Apologies, I was using "mutated" in the flippant "zomg, it's green and glowing" way.

I'll try to be unfailingly serious and accurate in the future.

to be fair, it would be a fairly unwanted characteristic in the wild. impossible to hide/camouflage

how long until we have pizza eating ninja turtles?

i liek toirtuls

its like albinism, we love it, but in the wild most albino animals have no chance, if they are the top of the food chain, they cant hide to ambush prey, if they are on the bottom of the food chain they are easy to find. and dont glofish have a fake gene that humans put in there, i mean as in they dont EVER have that gene in the wild.
