hi all, im a little bored of keeping BN's and the like. im looking at keeping something a bit more different. i have been having a look at some of the syno species as they swim rather than suck/rasp. im after something that wont breed like crazy and is non agressive (wont bother harlequins)
i also looked at pictus catfish but i know as they get larger so does their mouth, and there have been reports of them eating tetras etc. (if im going to have a shoal of 50-70 harlequins its not a good idea)

oh, and somethng that wont hide all the time, i like to be able to see my fish!

any suggestions?

well in my experiance syno's are the kings of hide and seek. i have to agree with you when you say pictus going after your harlequins so again not a great fish. you could try two spot catfish. i have two and for the first few weeks were pretty timid but now are active all the time in the tank. also stay small so i dout they would be able to eat your harlequins.

upside down catfish
they only get a about 2-3" they have small mouths so cant eat tetras and if you get a shoal (3+) you do see them out every now and again ut the more you get the more active they are

whats your ph if its around 8 you could get some Synodontis lucipinnis they only get 4" and i dont think they could get a rasbora in there mouth

those synos look very similar to the petricola's. i was initially looking at them.

i have seen the upside downs at my lfs a few times and have always been tempted, definately a wierd fish!

cheers for adding more choices :good:

I have some Akysis catfish that fit your wants quite well. They max out under 3", look something like bumblebee catfish, but aren't nocturnal critters. They're very active/visible at feeding time, and quite often I'll see 1 or 2 just zooming around the tank for no apparent reason.

yh they are alot like petricola's both will be fine in your tank i ment to put them aswell but alot of fish that are sold as petricola's are lucipinnis and lucipinnis are alot cheaper.

Midnight Catfish are really cool, and they usually come out pretty often once they've been in the tank a while. Plus they're peaceful and only get to 3.5-5 in. They hang around the bottom of the tank but don't suck onto it. :good:
