Unsure On This Stocking Suggestion?

A lot of people here think that tool allows you to way overstock a tank. If I added the amount the same tool lets me to my 4 foot tank I could have 9 feet of fish! It would be like the queue to the only open teller in a bank!
Many people use the 1 inch per gallon guideline to start with, it is still a useful guideline as long as it's not abused. No adding 15 inch fish to your 15 gallon tank :D

there's loads of those calculators around, think they're all awful tbh, not found one yet that's decent for the size of your tank. there's the odd one that's ok on compatibility, but in general i don't trust them.

It's not just that that thinkfish calculator puts a heavy load on the filter (though that is true too), it also doesn't leave enough swimming room IMO.

Are you sure you typed in the correct info.? Cause I come up with 10 with just a filter not with a over size filter.

I messed about with that calculator at one point just to see what it said I could have in my tank and it came up with 61 tiger barbs OR 20 discus OR 154 Ember Tetra in a 45 US gallon! ...which in my opinion is ridiculous!

It's nice to think that I could have so many cute little fishes, but its just not accurate. Its wrong that they can give out wrong info', someone who is learning, like myself, who dosen't come accross such a helpful forum, such as you know 'who'. lol, Could end up with problems.
I'm sure they are not doing it on purpose, it's just a calculation error with the software perhaps? :grr:

That calculator is dumb. It told me I could keep 98 inches of fish in my 55 gallon.

It's not an error in the program, if you read the explanation it confirmes what it works out if i remember correctly. I used the calculator aswell and came up with 28 inches for a 16 gallon tank. I asked the same question here and luckly miss wiggle informed me that it was overstocked, so i'd stick with 1 inch per gallon as my tank looks fairly full and very active.

Depending on the type of fish and the filtration and how mature the tank is, that is quite possible. A good filter with small fish making up that load would be easily doable :good: If it were large fish though, you would not be able to do it.

What fish you are keeping, makes a big difference to how many fish you are able to keep. Members on here are very prone to stating the inch per gallon rule as just that when it is more of a guideline. It is a useful guideline for quoting to newbies, but it is only a guide and won't work for working out how many lage plecos you can keep, for example an 18inch common pleco in a 18gal  Not good  You can also more inches of tetras in an 18gal, that 18inches worth with out problems assuming the filter is up to scratch.

I diden't look @ the calculator, so won't comment on it....

Just my 2 cents
