i bough a pair of anemonies the other month and one died about a fortnight after being introduced neither have settled into one spot for more that a couple of days, is there any advice to get this one settled before it dies?

If its constantly roaming, then it can't find the conditions it likes. You'll have to somehow create the conditions it likes. That means changing flow, increasing lighting, etc etc. What kind of anemone is it, how big of a tank do you have, what kind of lights do you have, and whats your flow turnover rate? also, i've heard a way to get one to settle down once it's picked a spot for a day or so, let a piece of food (shrimp or silverside, etc) drift into it's tentacles. The anemone will realize that it can find food in that spot and is more likely to settle down.

You really need to find out what isnt right though, and right it as soon as possible. Is it trying to move higher on the rock work? if so, it may need more light. If its staying low it may be looking for more flow.

some specifics will help us determine the problem i think...

its a malu anemone, we have another which has been settled since day one. its a rio 240 tank ie 240 litres, we have arcadia t5 lighting with 4 tubes, not too sure what the flowe rate is but we have 2 filters (1 internal & 1 external) and 3 powerheads. our other anemone is in the highest point in the tank practically at the water surface, so we presumed this anemone would like the higher spot aswell but every time we have plced it high it has moved back down to the sand. it has been accepted food in all places until recently. its just rolling around at the moment.
Thanx for your help!

Maybe some reasearch BEFORE buying an anemmone would have saved the 1st from dying & the 2nd from the stressfull life it is having

Internal Pumps will kill wondering Anemones
insufficient lighting will also starve the Anemone
Insufficient knowledge will kill your Anemone

IMO you tank & you knowledge level is insufficent to keep these delicate animals

also you should never move an anemone that has been wandering around. Its moving because its finding better conditions.

thanks for your advice but unfortunatly its nothing i didnt already know, the only thing i can put it down to is that the shop keeper had damaged its foot when removing it from the display tank, just gonna have to wait it out i think.

If you knew all the info already then why introduce an Anemmone to a tank that has Internal Powerheads that WILL mince it & LO lighting - insufficient to keep the Anemonne healthy

If the foot was damaged by the LFS, then why buy it, surely a quick check of the aniaml itself would have shown this

And the fact that you keep moving the animal shows that you lack the knowledge to keep this animal

JMHO

If the Nem is 'just floating' around then give the foot a once over to see if there is any damage to it

i agree with the powerheads suggestion but having power heads doesnt mean you cant keep anemones just prefable. it WILL mince it if it goes into the inlet yes.

what is LO lighting?

the foot 'might' of been damaged when bagging the anemone it was'nt damaged in the display tank so diagnosing a damaged foot on a shrivled up anmeone (as they do when bagged t)hrough 2 polythene bags isn't the easiest thing to do.

where is it that i said i keep moving it about? i said i placed it on a rock twice (1st time from the bag and second time after rolling on the sand) near my other anemone. presuming my other anemone finds this location prefable as its stayed there since introducing it to the tank 8 months ago. my laymans thinking it likes it there so might this one.

does anyone know what to look out for when examing its foot? what should be done if it is damaged?

No, but common scence will tell you it could mean a horrible death to the animal if it were to get caught ion the intake

LOW OUTPUT LIGHTING

NO but it would have been a massive fluck if the foot was damaged by bagging tbh

The most common damage is a simple tear, twists etc. usually arnt that much of a concern, more an odity AS for what can be doen - I am sorry to say but usually the damage (if severe) will mean death.
