Unpopular Opinions (fish related)

And they should make it so it’s illegal to keep less than six of a schooling fish. Ileggal to keep 1 goldfish, minimum tank size for goldfish before it’s illegal 40gallon
I think those big chain pet stores shouldn't even sell bowls and their horrifically tiny tanks should be reserved for invertebrates, fry, and maybe holding tanks during cleaning- stop putting betta on the packaging! Furthermore, I think employees should be obligated to tell their customers exactly how large a fish will get (and how much space it requires) so people stop doing things like putting tinfoil barbs and Bala sharks in 20 gallon tanks. If you don't know the most basic attributes of the species you have in stock, you probably shouldn't be selling fish.

Weird, i was reading about some lad who ended up in hospital because he wanted to partake in that drinking/swallowing 'game' ( but the only fish he could get his hands on was a cory. So the cory did it's thing and jammed its spines in the dude's throat
That is perfect. Also, I was an idiot as a kid. When I was around 7 or 8 I used to pet my pictus cats...they were very active and would swim excitedly up to feed. We probably shouldn't be petting fish anyways, but I wasn't even taking into consideration the sharp spines of the dorsal fin. No, they couldn't envenomate me but it still would have hurt if they did decide to sting!

Woohoo! Lisinopril/hydrochlorothiazide all around! Bathroom is first door on the right once the HCTZ kicks in.

Discus are overrated.

The breeding of "fancy" goldfish varieties, balloon bellied fish, blood parrots, etc is cruel. Shame on you!
An old teacher of mine kept a bubble-eye goldfish. The poor creature had such difficulty swimming and I was always worried that one of the bubbles would catch on a sharp plastic plant and pop. Now, I know that this actually happens and there is risk of infection. I think that selectively breeding an animal for a cumbersome (or worse, dangerous) phenotype is unethical.

I don't know. I've had neon tetras in the past and they've always schooled. It was a 20 gallon tank and they were fine until the black lace angels got large enough to look at those poor little critters as food. It was a community tank with other types of fish. The neon tetras never presented a problem. But, maybe it was the presence of bigger and badder tank mates? But, this was a pretty funny post!
Yeah, that sounds like angelfish. I've always wanted rummy nosed tetras but if I keep them with my angels and pictus cats they will vanish in two or three days tops.

I have 21 neons currently and they sort of school and sort of don't. At times they'll swim as one through the aquascape (a true sight to behold), at others they kind of just separate into smaller bunches, often with individuals hanging around by themselves in-between mingling with larger groups. They don't bother anybody either, themselves or other species. A lone male guppy that ended up in my tank on accident swims with them on and off (in fact their addition made him gain confidence).

There's another 20 black neons (plus 1 glowlight tag-along) that will soon be added out of quarantine so it'll be interesting to see what happens with those; if they'll mingle with the neons or just do their own thing on top of how their own shoaling behavior manifests.
What size is your tank?

My neons are evil little buggers! Or they were when there were 10 of them. I'm down to 5 now due to natural loss. Four go about in a small gang, and one hangs about on its own under the driftwood. They used to make my glowlights' lives a misery. We put a dozen harlequins in and these seem to intimidate them a lot, possibly because they are so fast and darty - even more so than the neons, and they do tend to stick together.

I have around 50 neons in a 55G tank along with cories. They all get along fine and schoal well together.

125 gallons. The black neons and glowlight (plus a couple apistos and 5 cories) were added yesterday and nothing's really changed in behavior. The only fish that really seem to be a bother whatsoever are the apistos (four in all) and they only annoy each other. Everyone else generally just mills about, have not seen any tetra aggression whatsoever thus far. I'm guessing it's both because of the tank size plus the sheer magnitude of numbers, as there's plenty of room for all plus any potential aggression that does rise up is mitigated to almost nothing due to it being distributed among so many individuals.

I like fish but hate cats. I like catfish and I like drowning cats so they look like catfish. Is this unpopular or what?

I want a werewolf emoji, can the admin people make me a werewolf emoji please?
And make a cat emoji so my werewolf can eat the cat.
You really, really are beyond redemption, Colin.

Bad Colin! Bad, bad, werewolf!

Go to your basket NOW!

You can post a little angry face at me all you want, but they viciously killed 3 angel fish in a matter of hours. And I had to get on a plane the next morning. I wasn't about to leave them in there and hope for the best. I have no second established tank, and I had no time to re-home them. I didn't want to flush them, but I couldn't think of anything else to do. :(
New to this site as of yesterday; figured this thread would give me a sense of the membership, and it's wonderful to see the easy banter and consideration. I use a writers forum which is the same, and I thought was unique.

Having said that... :shifty:

Native UK fish beat any and all other fish as pets. :p

I had a tank of sticklebacks for about three years when I was a kid - they were great!

I've started aquatic growing plants this year, and have had my fair share of both successes and failures. But I've killed off all my java ferns, which everyone has assured me is impossible, because they are the easiest plants.
Not just me, then?

My java fern had a short but miserable life - it seemed to blossom early on, but after about 5-6 months it obviously decided life wasn't worth living any more and disappeared almost overnight. Didn't even leave a suicide note.

Dead! - And never called me "Mother".

Odd. The Java ferns are one of the couple plants in my setup aside from the vallis that are actively thriving. Just yesterday I spent an hour gluing the hoard of babies they produced throughout the decor.

My Amazon swords are growing like things possessed - as is the Wallis, the elodea and the crypts . . . but the java, to my great disappointment (I'd bought it because it was supposed to be bombproof) just vanished.
