I clean 25% of my undergravel filter deeply, monthly after the tank has been up for close to a year. Prior to that, I don't deeply clean, it may look good but the filter is still setting, as long I don't over feed a light vac is plenty. On the sand tank with the 2 little cories, that sand is littered with orange antibiotic pill bits, but they are looking healthy, and I tried lifting that off the sand without sand and it didn't work, so I've just left it there, they get a very very tiny amount of flake once a day, and are scurrying around looking for food so I think all is well
