Uncommon Fish Keeping Tools

i've used things like blades from my table saw.
surprisingly useful for a lot of weird jobs. Like onetime, my angel fish breed on it, and i can use it for algee scraping (for the heavy duty algee).

two black cats to tap the glass periodically and ensure the fish dont fall asleep :D

Plastic bottles, make for excellent caves if you cut them right.
I also made a filter out of one that lifts the water and squirts it!

By the way, that toothbrush is ingenious!

It's not exactly an uncommon piece of equipment for an aquarium but maybe an uncommon use. If you have a lot of voracious eaters and are worried about food getting to the bottom for your bottom feeders, you can use piece of tubing to pour food into and let it come out on the bottom so it by-passes the top and middle of the tank. We went on the behind the scenes tour at the Georgia Aquarium and they have long piping at numerous areas around their main tank that houses the whale sharks. They pour in the food and then use air to blow it out the bottom for the bottom feeders. If you try it, you may also have to "help" it get out the bottom of the tube.

foot long bbq tongs. when your tank is 2 foot wide and 2 foot deep make a handy arm extension for those hard to reach spots.

you have design specs sounds like a good idea for my cories or khulis

I don't know if anyone else has seen these, but ALDI are currently selling a magnifying glass that folds out onto a little stand. I've got mine situated in front of my Female Betta soroity tank at the moment and I find it's really very useful for inspecting fish , inverts and plants closely without disturbing them ( although it's slightly disturbing for me when a Female betta looms at me unexpectedly from seemingly nowhere  )

I figured such a thing may also be useful for inspecting eggs and developing fry for those who breed ect?

i use a, mug, industrial sized ice cream tub, syringe, pipette ( robbed from school stock cupboard...and unused),scissors, pint glass, towel( for spills lol)and a tooth brush

ice cream tub is the best

for a good algy cleaner
you could try a kitchen scourer, bristle noosed plecos lol, freash cloth, kitchen towels.

kitchen towels are a must have, i loo of making everything water proof.
i would think a spatula would work well in removing algae.

i also use tropicana oj containers to hold water for me.

I use a plastic scouring pad for getting rid of algae. Works better than a razor IMO, just be careful not to pick up sand in it and scrape it all over the glass!

When I'm doing tank maintenance, I tend to use whatever I can find handy in the house - measuring jugs, cutlery, anything. I've got a glass spaghetti jar lined up as a shrimp hatchery for my next breeding project!

Some good ideas on here, keep them coming. :good:
