If you told me this, I would've told you straight to your face.... "Your Lying", but since it just happened, & I've seen it...... It's unbelievable!!!

With all the mining activities taking place around here, we often have little seismic events and I assume this is what happened, so one of my neon light setups, balancing on the edge of a tank... actually fell into the tank...... and the light was still on (under water)???

I'm no electrician, but common sense tells me that it should've blown the power??..... Maybe, only because the other end was still above water??

It is in a tank with Goldfish fry, and they're all still fine.

scary!!

bet you were not to keen to put yoru hands in

That happened to me once o_O I had my hands in the water at the time to (they weren't in there for very long I can tell you!), god did that scare me. It didn't even blow the power, and like yours, mine wasn't fully submerged. So maybe that's why?

 love it ludwig . quick fire hazard!!! electrocution hazard!! danger of death!!! kill the power?? no get the camera out and take pictures!!

Well... You're right.... my wife was in a panick right there.... so I figured that this situation must've happened several hours ago....so, (since I could not believe it)... what's in another minute to get a shot or 2..... proof is in the pudding..... I have shots of the event....

wow Ludwig, the fact you took time to take some shots of the event is just hilarious. :hey:

Hope that never happens to me

I always assumed the light fittings were waterproof due to the fact that most tanks will splash water into them from time to time. Surely this proves that they are :good: .

Do you not have a under water camera LV

Keith.

By the looks of that fitting they are just a standard fluorescent fitting. NOT water proof. and certainly NOT idiot proof. Occasional water splashes will only touch part of the fitting, there would need to be a continuous patch of water from one end fitting to the other in order for a short circuit to develop.

One end of a fitting in water won't do much, especially since the electric current is still flowing through the tube. If the tube had failed then the water suddenly becomes a preferable path - look out. Even with the tube working you could still be badly electrocuted if you stuck your hand in there.

Pure water is actually quite bad at conducting electricity, but any impurities (salt, nitrates etc) increase conductivity. Salt water is quite conductive and more dangerous than freshwater for electrocution.

Either way - just not worth the risk. Respect electricity. If it can find a way to earth itself through you then you're a goner.

And having the light drop in while your hands are underwater - get em out fast. Yeah you might be OK but it's like playing russian roulette - different footwear or a wet floor or your other hand is touching something metallic and grounded.. maybe the fluoro fitting is faulty I've seen some scary stuff come out of Asia. just because you pulled the trigger once and you're still alive doesn't mean there are no bullets in the revolver!
