ultra sadness

Do you have any livebearers or easy breeding fish or too much plants that you could sell for a bit of profit?

Always price check on their website. They will match the website price, which can be up to 50% cheaper than the marked price.

edit: I was thinking of petco, but the same is likely true with petsmart.

Find a good local shop and stay away from the chains. If you're buying unhealthy fish, you'll spend more in the short long run.

I firmly believe this to be the case. In the past 12+ years, every fish species I have acquired from a Petsmart, Petland or Mr. Pets, with one or two exceptions, ended up introducing disease into my tank(s). Sometimes (more fortunate) the fish died in the QT, but too often they waited until they were in the display tanks (after 8, 9 even 10 weeks in QT with no sign of trouble) to suddenly die and infect the other fish. The fact that this has never occurred with any of the fish acquired from independent fish stores cannot be just coincidental.

local fish stores > petsmart/petco any day

the local petsmart i trust they take really good care of their fish, all dead fish are almost instantly removed and the tanks have nice power heads

the local fish store is like a 20 min drive so i only go ther 2 times a week

k, i have 300, 600, 1000, 1500 and 2000
not really by the thousands but 100 duckweed is a surprisingly small amount

I've seen a few of the chains where they took really good care of the fish. That's not the issue. It's the purchase power clout of the big operation driving prices down at the farm level. That in turns leads to cutting corners in raising the fish, and disease gets loose. The problems are there before the fish arrive in the store.
A lot of local stores buy differently, from diverse sources. They pay a little more and so do you, but a cheap fish that dies in 3 months versus a buck more and a 7 year lifespan?

As has been mentioned, there are two issues here. The first is the "care" of the individual store. But the second which is the real issue with chain stores is the source of the fish. All the proper care by staff in the local store dopes not have any impact on the diseased fish coming from the supplier. Whenever possible, I have acquired wild caught fish through independent stores because these stores are free to select their suppliers. And again, the fact that these fish do not come down with disease cannot just be coincidence.
