Hi all,

just wondering if anyone knows of a good online / mail order retailer for livestock. I've seen tyne vally aquatics and i might give them a go, but thats the only one i've seen shipping livestock in the UK and they dont have some of hte items i'm after.

Cheers

Andy

Trimar were always reliable for me.

Funnily enough, Trimar let me down, but the staff sound knowledgeable, so I wouldn't avoid them in the future.

What are you after? I'm assuming it's something out of the ordinary, that your LFSs don't stock.

I'm up near Manchester (or down depending on where you are :D ). Tried Oasis in Manchester, Abyss in Stockport and Dav's Aquarium in Bolton (the aquatic superstore thingy), and none sell cherry shrimp or hatchet fish.

Cheers

There's a few forum members selling red cherry shrimp in the Classifieds Section, not that I can personally recommend any particular member, as I've never bought from there, but probs worth a quick squint.

Strangely enough, my formerly-favourite LFS always had Marbled Hatchetfish in stock (they've closed now, and it's a bloomin' long way from Manchester to Hampshire). I'm sure I've seen them in at least 1 branch of Maidenheads, maybe try them - I've never not seen Cherry Shrimp in MA as well, and I've been in at least 4 branches.

I have used S&C Aquatics in Durham for m/o, but first batch of Girardinus Falcatus turned up dead, second lot were fine. I did wonder about the packaging, though - not double-bagged, and no heat pack in late Spring.

Might be worth a PM to Tizer about Coxwell, they do mail order, and I believe he said they actually recommended fishless cycling, so I would presume from this that they would package their fish correctly

Ooh, really? How so?

The only time I've been to the shop, the tanks were clean, fish in good condition, and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Telling me they had some Phallocerous Caudimaculatus in stock, taking my credit card, then phoning me a week later to tell me they didn't have them after all. Obviously I would rather they hadn't had my c/c details if they weren't going to use them.

In fairness, this was back in the snow in January, and they wouldn't send any fish out (which is entirely fair enough), and a week later when it had thawed out enough, they didn't have any in stock.

It could have been that someone purchased "my" fish from the shop, but the cynic in me says that they were hoping to get some in, and told a little white lie to stop me from going elsewhere.

The staff on the phone sounded both professional and knowledgeable, which is why I said I wouldn't rule out using them in the future. Never been to the shop, Truro's a bloomin' long journey (mind you, it's not as far as Berlin!)

As far as I am aware, they don't reserve the fish for online purchases as the shop floor is quite small and they didn't seem to have any spare tanks, which is why they got me to call on the day and double check that they had the right fish in before they posted them out…

I was visiting a friend in Cornwall and we were driving back to his place after seeing the Eden Project, I randomly happened to remember the postcode for the shop, so we decided to stop by and have a look :)

I randomly happened to remember the postcode for the shop,

Blimey! That's a helluva thing to randomly remember! :D

Worth a trip though? If I ever happen to be down Truro way?

I would say so, they had plenty of interesting species in the shop which were worth seeing :good: although the shop wasn't that well laid out some 3-4 years ago, maybe they've redone it since…

Dont know if its any help at all but fish like Hatchets and the less common or wild caught cories and other SA fish are all very seasonal, we seem to have gone right into the slump atm, have been ordering hatchets for about 2 months and they just arent coming in.

Maybe if you arent in such a hurry, have a chat with your LFS and ask them if thy are likely to get hatchets in/would be willing to order them when they become available... most decent fih shops would be more than happy... its just a timing thing... spring might be better!

people keep recommending Kesgrave Tropicals on Ebay to me. I haven't had anything from them yet, but I've heard nothing but good things.

They have your Marbled Hatchet Fish and they also sell a wide variety of shrimp, although there are members on here selling them at very good deals (may I recommend Fishprotectors shrimp which are a bargain and he's a really nice member)
