so i'm cycling my tank right now, and i picked up a danio to do it since they were out of plattys. apparently they gave me a pregnant danio because i was changing the water and noticed six or so little babies swimming around. i caught them all, and they are all sitting in cups right now. what should i do? i really can't breed fish. i only have a 5 gallon tank in my dorm room. should i just put them in the tank and see if they survive, or should i keep them in a little gold fish bowl or something?

i really don't want to purchase a breeding net. i really don't want to have to raise fish while i'm trying to set up my little 5 gallon tank.

this has been way too much work.

Or you could give it back to your lps or give to a friend that wants them.

Why not just take them to the store and tell them your situation.

i already called. they told me they don't take back baby fish.

Do you have a friend that wants them? If not you could raise them in a goldfish bowl until they get bigger and you can put them in the 5 gallon tank until their big enough to return to your lps.

Uhm Danio's lay (scatter) eggs - they don't give live birth
And they are notorious for eating the eggs as soon as they drop them - fry will only ever hatch in a heavily planted tank otherwise no chance whatsoever.
Eggs take about a week to hatch.

What other fish do you have ? They are (almost) certainly not Danio's.....

i have a pearl danio in my tank and that is it. it did lay eggs, is it possible they hatched already?

nevermind it hasn't been a week. i have no clue where these babies came from then. it was labeled pearl danio at the pet store and looks exactly like the one in the picture.

This is absolutely fascinating: you've got one single danio in a 5 gallon tank and it's had babies! Not only do danios lay eggs (and eat them), they also need a male to fertilise same eggs once they've been laid.
There's been a lot in the papers recently about parthenogenic embryos, but I didn't realise danios were involved...
There are two possible explanations:
Either this is a true miracle flying in the face of nature and you should bring it to the attention of the proper authorities (who's the patron saint of fish? St Peter?)
Or (perhaps more likely) these babies came in as stowaways from the fish shop.

I am a little worried by the fact that you have discussed this tank in two fish forums (at least), yet noone has mentioned that a 5 gallon tank is not suitable for fast swimmers like danios. I know this is not your fault, since you were specifically advised to use a danio (only just read your thread, which is why I haven't said anything). Eventually you might want to upgrade, if so, danios are happy in 20 gallons and upwards and they are schooling fish so should ideally be kept in groups of 6 or more.
Should you find yourself without occupants for this tank, then a betta would be its ideal inhabitant. Bettas don't mind small tanks and are very attractive fish.
