Types Of Betta

Okay, I'm trying to decide on what Betta fish I want, it's probably going to be from Petco so it will have to be one of the following:

*What they just call a "betta" http/www.petco.com/product/101068/Betta-Male.aspx

* A crowntail http/www.petco.com/product/101069/Betta-...-Tail-Male.aspx

* A halfmoon http/www.petco.com/product/101885/Betta-Halfmoon-Male.aspx , or

* a Delta Tail http/www.petco.com/product/101884/Betta-...-Tail-Male.aspx

I just put the male links on there- I'm still debating on a female or male. I like crowntails the best- although I've heard they're more sensitive. I get my water from a well, so it's not treated if that matters. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Even though you get your water from a well, you should still test it anyway with a liquid test kit ( more accurate than dip strips ) . So you know the basic PH of the well water at the very least. It may be a bit softer/more acidic than your average tapwater if it's from a natural source/spring, but it will basically depend on the geology of the area, what rocks the water is passing through and over will go some way to determining it's PH . You will also need the kit to help your filter cycle, the ammonia and nitrite tests will show you when the levels peak and fall so you know when it's safe to add any fish.

with regards to which "tail type" to go for.. its entirley your preferance.. i mean ive got 6 males now (!!) and ive got two halfmoon, two crowns, a veiltail (same as the delta in ur links) and a double tail and ive got the veil, HM and a crown in the same tank (divided) and they are all in the same healthy condition.. it all depends which tail type catches ur eye the most, but also what colours. and as i said.. if u go to an LFS or online site, its what ever catches your eye the most.. whether that be finnage or colour

with what honeythorn said it is a good idea to test your well before hand, my well water comes out of the tap with A-0, NI-0, NA-20 and a PH-8.

well water or even tap water can have high enough levels of ammonia, nitites or nitrates to make a fish ill, but not ever bother a human. and there are some specific areas that have off the chart high ph.
