Can I use regular sewing thread or plastic thread that seems to be the same as fishing line to tie down plants ? It won't release toxins or anything will it?

You can use weather resistant thread. (Marine quality)

Or you can use fishing line. I use both. :)

Yes, you can use threads to tie java fern and Anubias. Another option is to use super glue gel to attach ferns and Anubias.

I use both from time to time. (Just makes sure to keep your plant moist when your glue is drying. ;))

I use sewing thread. It eventually disintegrates but by that time the plants roots are clinging to the rock, wood, whatever.
