These newly added chunks of rock are greywhacke sandstone,a sedimentary rock which forms the bedrock of the Scottish southern uplands and also parts of the Scottish highlands.Greywhacke bedrock can be easily split into smaller angular rocks.
Greywhacke also contains quartz veins caused by super heated water bringing minerals up from deep within the earth,running through the fissures in the rock and then through a change in conditions as the water cools quartz is formed,like the thin whiteish vein running along the bottom of the third rock to the right of the three small front rocks,and within these veins of quartz gold can be present.
The big Greywhacke at the rear in the photo is much rounder and smoother than the other smaller rocks and isn’t broken.That big chunk of Greywhacke is a treasure in itself that I pulled out of a tiny Scottish burn,but there was more……..
Also beneath that rock was a tiny nugget of pure Scottish gold,a rare find indeed.
This big old piece of Greywhacke was probably hiding it’s treasure for hundreds of thousands of years,and that’s why it’s the new centre piece in the tank.
