I recently purchased a few new fish, one of the platys look very pregnant, then as I'm fish watching I see a small fry. This was early this AM, I'm sure of what I seen but have not seen it sence, my question is I have no live plants in my tank(only plastic), well any babies survive with out live plants? the fry may have been this size * it was so exciting :hyper:

Second question......I have a plastic screen/platform (don't no the proper name for it) that is placed on the bottom of the tank then the gravel is placed on top of this, I do not have a gravel filter and am wondering if this is necessary? If I decide to put live plants in the aquirium does this have to go?
Thanks sandra

Hello!

Congrats on the fry. The fry, especially livebearers, don't need to have live plants. If you have enough ornamental decor and/or fake plants, then they will have places to hide and be safe. Second, there's no need to have that plastic screen if you aren't using an undergravel filter system. If you have an external filter, remove that screen. Of course, I wouldn't change anything in the tank until your fry gets bigger though.

thanks for replying
i have seen several more fry, I have also seen the black mollys harrass and possably eat them ):  . I have added a few more bushy plastic plants and a few that float as well. hoping to save a few.
I will remove the screen ASAP as I would like to try a few live plants.
Again thanks for the reply.
