Two Possible Betta Tanks

Don't get a betta for the jar at all no matter whether it's a bigger jar or not. They really need a tank with a heater and filter. Not just a heater.

I really wouldn't recommend a sorority as you're a beginner and you NEED 5 females minimum. More is much, much better but you can't fit more than 5 females in your tank and that would be ALONE. No tankmates at all.

So you'd be working on bare bones with the number and in a small tank... That is a recipe for disaster... Female betta's can be a lot worse than males, trust me I know!

The goldfish were in a tank way too small. They need a 200l bare minimum with an extra 45l for every extra goldfish. So the five goldfish your friend gave you in a 10G(45L) actually needed a 380L BARE minimum... They were housed in a tank too small for them.

This all good advice. The jar will be no good as Betta's are air breathers and therefore need a large surface area so a jar is no good.
i disagree with you depending on size the jar can be suitable and it doesnt need a filter if they do every other day Water changes.

Everyday waterchanges is stressful for the fish and the ammonia and nitrite build up overnight so I disagree with non-filtered tanks as they are toxic at some point in the day every day until a waterchange is done and then the toxins build up again after the waterchange. In a filtered tank(as long as it's cycled) there will be no toxins unless you "uncycle" the filter. Simple as. Also, my other point about the jar was that Jars have a thinner neck and so a smaller surface area which is no good for a betta, especially with no filter, as they are labyrinth fish.

I completely disagree. The betta will be fine in the jar. And i am looking at only getting one male betta for the ten gallon and some neon tetras and maybe a zebra dion.

The goldfish were fine! They were better off than they were before in a bowl and they lived out the rest of their lives healthy and happy!

sorry i dont i agree with you, i never saw surface area as being a problem with bettas, and as for the daily water changes bit you have a point on wcs stressing the fish out but it can still be done.

The jar does not have a skinny neck, believe me! It is actually as wide as the jar itself. It is a vintage five gallon mason jar. I boiled it to get rid of bacteria and will cycle both tanks, not to worry. And i soaked it in dechlorinated water too.

the danios and the tetras need swimming space so no to the 10 gallon, the goldies get stun ted in the bowls and living 1 4th of your lifespan doesnt mean there happy.

We've told you. Neon Tetra's and Zebra Danio's are too big for the 10 gallon. You'd only be able to have Forktail Rainbowfish, Ember Tetra's or Galaxy Rabsoras in the 10 gallon with your male Betta.

NCGuppy: I've noticed a difference in betta's kept with smaller surface area's.

As for the goldfish, they were stunted and in pain. Simple as. They may have lived another 3 years in the tank but they were probably only about 1-3 years old before your neighbour got them anyway which means they still died young when they could have lived to over 30 years in the correct conditions.

We dont know how old they were! And i have heard so many people say differently about neon tetras, my friend has actually kept a group of seven in a ten gallon and they lived seven years.

They are too active for a ten gallon. Surviving isn't thriving. Simple as.

ok i agree with you now paradise its best to have a setup that mimics the natural habitat and the bettas do have plenty of surface area in the wild.

You can get Galaxy Rasboras and Ember Tetra's at Walmart. I may not be in the U.S but I've seen a few people on here and on facebook groups that have bought both Galaxy Rasboras and Ember Tetra's in Walmart.

Its not like i can just run out and get different fish
Ok, i assure you if they have ember tetra fish i will buy them instead of neon
