Righto, so i aquired two new plecos today. I have currently 1 "Orange Spot Pleco" downstairs in my 280L, and wanted another one. So i went out and bought another one today. This is my unknown pleco because i've done some searching online to double check and i can't quite fathom what pleco i have. Due to the fact Orange Spot Plecs that come up on the trusty google search look nothing like what i have. Well anyway, i have two of them. One downstairsstairs in the 280L and one upstairs in the 180L.

Would love it if people can give me some idea of what plec he/she is. So heres some pictures of my lil fella. Only plec i can get relatively similar pics of is L074 Tiger Plec. Which supposedly gets to 4" right?

The only pictures i can get of him in relative focus i'm afraid. Shall try and get some better ones soon.

Onto the other plec i came home with today. I've always like them, and never seen one, and after seeing one in the flesh today at the shop i just had to have one. At £45 i may have paid slightly on the high side, not sure but i simply love him/her. So beautifull. Currently about 3 inches long.

The algae in these pictures is on all the old leaves from when i struggled to get some form of balance. So far new growth has been fine. I'll cut the old leaves away at some point  Hopefully my plecs should assist with the rocks.

After introducing him to the tank after a 1 hour acclimatising he was straight to the front of the tank which i was thankfull for. My female dempsey was straight out to check out who the newcomer was, she was peacefully just watching closely though.

Ignoring the algae in these pictures  I'm absolutely loving his colouration. So far he seems happye which is good. Heres some better pictures of him in the tank exploring his new home, and all the algae he can munch.

Very pleased with my new purchases. I'm really looking forward to seeing how much these beautys grow.

Any ideas what plec the first one is though?

Cheers, James :good:

The first pleco seems to ne some sort of Ancistrus, maybe LDA08/Gold Marbled Catfish
The green pleco with yellow fins is L047 Magmum/Mango Pleco, a relative of the Gold Nugget Pleco

The other plec is a L001 gold spot plec, related to the common plec and get to the same size

He is what the lfs's are now calling orange spot plecs, i picked one up recently and he's beautiful but he isn't in my L number book so i'm assuming he's a new breed of orange spots the same way people get more red on oscars theyve now done to get more orange on plecs.
The ones i've found that may match up or be simalar are
l165 gibbiceps venezuela
l001/l022 glyptoperichthys/pterygoplichthys joselimaianus
None of the others in my book contain the orange spots actually on the eyes like these guys do.
Either way there lovely.

Well if they are indeed related to the common plec i've been sold a potential tank buster plec that will have to be housed with my oscar later in life. They sold me him at £4.99 and the label said 6-8" top size. If they're wrong i'll be miffed. Not disapointed as such, because he'll be a whopper beaut as he grows if this is the case. It will jsut mean that in my 6ft tank (when i get it) i'll possibly have 3 whopper plecs in there. Not so good. But i'll cross that bridge when i come to it.

The second one i wouldn't say was green or have yellow fins, to me he's blue/black with white/cream trims maybe im mistaken but ud be tempted to say he's either a
parancistrus sp l332 or
more likely a baryancistrus sp l047

Magnum pleco he is. With a bluey/black colouration and cream tips indeed. No doubting he is a magnum.

The other one is the confusing one.

if hes a l165 your looking at
50-60 cm
ph4-7
25-30 c

if hes a l001 your looking at
40-50cm
5-7ph
26-29 c

either way i have 6 plec that will now reach this size so i know what boat your in :D, problem is im the one that takes them on when they get too big for the 2foot they were bought for.

I just picked up a royal plec, was told it's reach 6-10cm max, i've now found it's more 30-40cm.....Not good.Hope i've helped.

The L047 in my LFS are green with yellow edges so I probably got so used to that I didnt notice this fella actually had cream peachy fins

Definately going to be looking at getting a 72x24x24 instead of the 72x24x18 i've been looking at  I wanted a 6x2x2 anyway :p

Magnums vary from bluey/greeny/black with yellow/creamy/white tips. I've seen both, and always preferred the bluey with cream tips :p

I agree with most people the first is probably L001. The stated fish shop size (7-8in) is a common (mis)belief as L001 is actuallly listed in "plecs under 8in" list pinned at the top of this section of the Forum!I know from experience that this is false as mine is over a foot now -hope he stops growing as I don't have room for 6x2ft tank but I would never part with him. However they are lovely plecs, very peaceful gentle giants and I recommend them so you made a good choice :good: . They love their veg and feed well with no problems. Also active from dusk every day so you will get to see a lot of him. He was my first plec and is my favourite fish.Love him! :shout:

indeed an....

L001, pterygoplichthys joselimaianus

and an

L47, baryancistrus sp (mango/magnum plec)

Another on agreeing the first one is an L001, I had one of these guys for a while it was 6" when he arrived, and 10" when I found him a suitable home.
