Hi there,

Is it possible to house two male dwarf gourami's in the same tank? It's a 160L which i plan on making into a community tank which will be heavily planted.

Thanks,

Dan

Cool, i heard rumors that they would fight it out or something.

i have 3 in my 60 gallon tank, they're fine and get on well with my other fishes.

3 males?..... Cool. perhaps i'll ask in my LFS for their opinion. Thinking of that, when you see them in the fish store, there are allways loads of males crowded into a single tank and they seem happy enough.

In fish stores they are crammed in and have no chance to establish a territory and there are usually no females. Once in a tank they consider home they will establish territories and get defensive of it even if no females are around just in case. It depends on what you kind of gourami you intend to keep. If you have room to hold two then go for it but make sure there are plenty of plants in the tank and hiding spaces incase they do start to fight.

honestly, i dont know why some people suggest keeping dwarf gouramis in pairs. theyre already prone to illness as it is. if you have two males in a tank it'll increase stress without a doubt. in my experience one male will dominate the other... and even the dominating male will have more stress because he'll constantly be defending his turf. on the other hand, if kept singly they're much more active and entertaining.

and they get along in fish stores because their are so many of them in a small space. they give up on territory when in large groups.

but if you decide to go through with keeping two try to make sure theyre roughly the same size... and add them to your tank at the same time.
