Hi there, I bought a cheap tank of ebay. It has a pump that pull the water on the hood to 3 compartiments with 1 sponge each then the water drops back to the tank from a whole on the other side.
It's very noisy that's why I bought a Fluval 3. I am still fishless cycling the tank. So sometimes I have both filters on and sometimes I turn off the noisy one.
My question is: can I still do the same thing when I get add the fish. 1 filter on during the day and 2 at night?

No i'm afraid, your bacteria colony will die off if you switch a filter off.

If you turn the filter off, especially the one in the hood which is a wet and dry or trickle filter you risk the beneficial bacteria dying off. If you don't like the noise of the trickle filter, just use the fluval 3. What size tank have you got?

My tank is 80x29x54cm sellers say 128l but when filled it holds 25kg of gravel and 83l of water.
When I switch the filter of some of the water stays on the hood and the sponges are not dry. Will that not keep the bacteria alive?
Thank you all for your help. This forum is very helpful.

That fluval three no good on its own, maybe add a fluval 4 with it.
Just squeeze old sponges onto the new wet sponges to get the bacteria into them, if you decide you no longer want the nosiy filter.

On the same subject, I also have two filters in my 200L tank, a Fluval 4 and a fluval 2. I was wondering about positioning. At the moment I have one in the top, rear right hand corner, whilst the other is in the bottom, front left hand corner. This seems to be working well except that sometimes when I get up in the morning the Fluval 2 has fallen onto the gravel. I'm guessing this is because of the waterflow. I was wondering if anyone had had the same issue and myabe found a solution for it? :good:

Lol there a pain in the arse them fluvals for falling down into the gravel, I just leave them now.

They need to design a better suction pad for them.

I'm glad it's not just me cursing them damn suction pads.

I was thinking about using aqua silicon sealant but that reduces my flexibility when cleaning and re-arranging. I thinkl, like yourself Wilder, i'm just gonna leave it there.

Eheim aqua ball filters have good suctions pads, but not sure if they would fit on the fluval.

will the bacteria die if I kept the water on the hood but switch the wet & dry heater off?

If you are that unhappy with the filter just get another one.
