No you should not. You have no idea what kind of turtle it was, and clearly have not researched into the care. They need huge enclosures and can live for 40 years+, its not something you can just get out of easily, as many rescue centres are chock-a-block full of unwanted turtles. What species was it, and can you provide the following:
-A tank with 10G of water PER INCH of turtle shell, taking into account the size a turtle will grow to (they grow quick)
-A filter rated for a tank 3 times the size of the tank (turtles are a heck of a lot messier than fish)
-A water heater
-UVB lighting that needs replaced every 6 months
-Veterinary care for the turtle, as they can easily get sick, and the vet bills can easily reach hundreds of £s.
-A varied diet daily, pellets do not cut it.
