Is it a good idea to turn off the pump sometimes to give the fantails i have a rest. It's a HBL-501 pump, big thing, and it's sucks water in through the the bottom of a tube that goes down to about the gravel height. It's not strong enough for them to struggle swimming, but when they're resting down there they do get pulled towards it. Should I give them a break by turning it off?

Also, one of my fan tails has got one eye that is completely black. I thought at first it is just to do with his pigmentation, cause he's orange but with black spots all over him. Does this mean he's blind or is it something else?

Cheers.

Never turn off the pump/ filters.
If the filters are off for more than an hour you will lose the beneficial filter bacteria and end up with water quality problems.
If the water flow is too much for the fish try facing the filter outlet into the side of the tank.

I believe there is a dial type of knob on the top of the intake that you can use to restrict the flow of water. It might be worth playing with this to see if it makes any difference. It may also be that the natural current of the water from the outlet and the suction of the inlet combine to cause the problem. You could maybe try re-arranging any decor to break up the flow of water a little maybe.

When we bought our Red Oranda we were looking at some of the Calico's as well, a few of them had one black eye like you have mentioned, so I would think it is just the way your fish is marked really and nothing more serious than that.
