Hi there,
I have just completed the setup of my first mini reef (100l) by converting a rekord96. Yesterday I added a couple of turbo snails to cope with a recent bloom of diatomic (tea stain coloured) algae. One of the snails is happily munching away but the other has not moved since being added to the tank. How do I tell if he is dead? I can see his foot hanging down but he does not appear to be moving. ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate all zero.

Well jst give it some time and see how it gets on! U should know within a day or 2 if it has moved about or is still in the same spot!

Im also in the process of turning a rekord96 into a nano reef! B)

dont worry about them at the moment mate, if they are going a funny colour and turn upside down then you know it is time to pull them out, i have had some snails that i have not seen move 4 day , only to find out that it does infact move around the tank (only at night) and return to the same spot for a little power nap LOL. i must have some dam smart snails cos it s a big tank LOL.

yes i have been reading your thread but only registered to post today. I also toyed with the idea of a refugium but decided it wasn't worth the hassle. Hows yours working out?
Im using;
10k live rock
red sea prism skimmer
external eheim canister filter
hydor kyrandia powerhead
arcadia 4 lamp luminaire

I setup the tank 7 days ago and added the fully cured premium live rock 2 days later. Will post some pics in due course. Bit worried about this snail though, I think they tend to be starved of food whilst held at the dealers due to a lack of diatoms. I handpicked the 2 most lively looking but I suppose thats the way it goes sometimes!

cheers rob, Im pretty sure hes still alive as his foot keeps twitching, although im a little concerned that his foot is neither fully retracted into the shell or gripping the rock that i perched him on. Time will tell i suppose.

moved about 2 inches this morning then retracted completely into his shell!

Don't worry about it, when i got my turbos, one was moving all over the place but the other 1 oly seemed to move about 1cm per day, after a week or two it started moving everywhere. It may just be getting used to its new home or found a good patch of algae.
good luck
Will

This thread answered a question I was going to ask :)

I got 4 snails at the weekend and an orange legged hermit crab. The hermit crab has taken up home on top of one of the bits of LR and has spent all his time stuffing his face with the algae that has grown on it (its a big rock and he is a very little crab so I dont expect him to move very far :) ).

I got turbo snails and two snails that he LFS girl couldnt remeber the name of (mexican something....) but assured me they are algae grazers and stay small. One of the turbos and one of the other ones are doing fine and moving around loads.

But then the other two haven't moved from where I put them. The mexican "thingymejig" seemed to turn itself so its foot was showing and was "digging" up the sand around it. I put it on a rock (which the other one immediately went to) and it hasnt moved since. The Turbo that isnt moving did have its foot out and was stuck to the container bottom I used to drip acclimitise them in but haven't even seen him twitch.

They where put in at the weekend so I was going to give them till tommorrow afternoon and then remove them. Should I just leave them for longer? I figured they are either dead/dying or just having a hard time adjusting to different water conditions (in which case they might pull round still).

Ammonia, nitrite at 0 and nitrate at less than 5ppm. Did a drip acclimitisation over 2 hours and the SG at the LFS is pretty much identical to mine.

Ive decided not to worry about him, He does move a few inches during the night so im assuming he is just settling in.
