Hello, I'm Mike, and I'm looking for Identity information on the Tucan or Watermelon Fish I have the Scientific Name but not with me at the moment, it is the Soft-Freshwater preferring kin to the Hard-Freshwater preferring Pink-tailed Characin. The literature and information I have been able to get  detailed the specimen as Soft-Freshwater preferring, maximum sizes in the range of ten (10) inches in length, fin coloration from deep red ranging to oranges( as opposed to the Pink-tailed Characin where these identifiers are pink, that and its preferance to hard water environments are written as the only differances between the species), and is an active predator. All which are verified from a specimen I currently have from adoption. It's active predatory habits do not make it aggressive, in fact until its hungry, its pretty placid with some active tendancies.

I am not able to find information about sexual identity or identifying, as unlike the Pink-tailed Characin the liturature says the Tuscan or Watermelon Fish has had no successes in capitive breeding, it also has not been witnessed at any scale in wild habitats, the literature states that they are "PROBABLY" similar to the Pink-tailed Characin, and that is it no information of sexual identifying on them either.

Once this can be accomplished  , of course sooner rather than later, I am also trying to find a suitable life companion for it. It is now 5.5 inches long recently separated from its companion from when they were real small, and stuffed into a small 10 gallon tank in a chain pet store where all tanks share the same water and diseases, so it was a rescue, as the pet store doesn't commonly carry these and really has no further use for it. My local shop, does not carry the larger tetras aside from the Gar Characin or the Freshwater Barracuda, and has never heard of this Softwater Specimen although he has heard of the Pink-tailed Characin

I went quickly to retreive the scientific name of the species, Chalceus erythrurus. The species also reqires a soal of 6 to 8 specimens. This would indicate, I am also insearch of particularly 5 specimens more, but depending on convenience for the seller will except more, but the inconvenient part is that they will need to be relatively the same size 4.5 inches long to 6 inches long :( !
