Hi..thought we could keep this area alive and interesting. I just purchased this coral as I am feeling comfortable enough to try and support it. For those who don't know it, this coral does not contain zooxanthellae, or the symbiotic algae necessary to support a coral by photosynthesis. This coral must be fed. So, the challenge is on. It's amazing how bright orange this coral is. It was acclimated yesterday and hasn't opened yet. Hopefully, it'll do well. Anyone with experience with tubastrea. feel free to post. SH

I am on my second try with this. The first time it lasted only a couple months, didn't have it in a dark enough spot. This time we found a better spot and really work to feed it. Not sure that it is going to make it this time either but I can say I won't try again if I loose it. guilt wont let me kill 3 of them.

Keep your lights on a good steady timer and be sure you follow a good steady and generous feeding shedual.

I had one of these (Sun Corals) in my last reef tank, feed it on a mixture of things including - planfton, Broken Fresh Mussels, Brine Shrimp.

Mine loved the Mussels as they are very smelly

:) :)

Well..I've put a lot of work into my tank and these guys are going to be a pain. I actually had to pull the frag in a container of SW and flood it with food to get them to open. I tried in the tank but required so much food that my nitrates climbed and the skunk and ocellaris were stealing the mysid shrimp. SH

Yeh I always removed mine just after my Main lights went out, Bloody thing only feed at night in near absoulute darkness

I also had to flood the glass with food (mainly Mussels) to get the little bugger out

Really nice when she did come out thought

but what a Pain in the A**

Darn straight Chac..for a 24G, the amount of food needed to get it to open and then feed it (while the fish and shrimp are hijacking it) is near toxic bioload levels....lol....I think I'm going to have to do it that way. SH

Look how they have opened:

Well done SH :kewlpics: :kewlpics:

Sun Corals are one of my Favs.

What did U end up feeding him then

Getting some new Ricordia FloridaMuchies Soon so maybe an idea to post them in the FW sections as well :ninja: :ninja: :ninja: :ninja:

Just a pity we in the UK can get them direct from the US

our lfs has 2 of these in at the moment - been looking for them for ages...

If only I had a tank setup

You can rc...if you really want it.

Hey Chac.....where do you get the ricordeas from if not from near here? I finally got them to open in a separate container flooded with squid and mysis shrimp. They are opening on their own now. SH

its a simple choice..

setup a reef tank or get married
(and i'm not talking money here :) )

I have a couple of links to peeps in the US who I contacted a while back and will send them but was concerned regarding CUSTOMS , not quite sure how to get past that hurdle, I have noticed there has been a lot of questions recently on a lot of UK boards regarding these muchies & how to get a hold of them

I have contacted a couple of places on my side of da pond but the price difference is unbeleivable

$9.00 per polyp in the US

£ 25.00 ($43.00) per polyp in the UK :grr: :grr:

If you want me to I will pm you the links if they are of any use to ya
